Hello.

I am new on modding so i decided to put this first post here.

I have had a plan of making my laptop new look. Not re-paint it but rebuild it. i want to make it in to aluminium chassis. The reason i write here is that i would like to have some tips for creating it. My laptop is not very powerful (Asus netbook) but i want to make it into something, that can take pressure and would have better cooling. Also i am planning on adding some battery's.

i know it would be bigger and weigh more, but idea is to make it strong as tank and reliable. (I am good at handcraft so i decided to use it on my little fella in the bag.)

What i do know, is that i need to make blueprint from the old casing so i could design new one. I am already working on that. Any other ideas?

2 words. CNC milling.

Nawww... where is the fun in that? :glasses:

i forgot to say, that i love messing around. :smoker:

Anyways. Other ideas, than let it be made by machine and be bored?

EDIT: On a second thought... i belive that some details might be made with CNC but i dont want to have just assembly fun of it.

I would absolutely love to see this happen!

I've thought about doing it before with my old laptop before I busted it all up and scrapped it for parts. My idea was basically to just get some blocks of aluminum and mill them out. It was the easiest method I could think of, but probably also the most expensive. lol

I've just always like the look of those aluminum macbooks, but I don't like their price tags or operating system. (or the apple logo for that matter)

It should be interesting to see how you go about this, since you don't seem to be interested in milling out the chassis. You could actually probably just create a "case" for it. Kind of like those YoTank (http://www.yotank.com/) products. Just an idea.

To me, you have two routes:

1. (easiest) Design a case with a small number of parts and have it CNC milled.
2. (hardest) design a case with a bunch of parts, hand craft them all yourself.

If you are going for a small number of parts, it will be exceptionally hard to get the main case just right with handcrafting no matter what your skill level. If you want a small and sparse, or even intricate/crafty design you can make a lot of small pieces and put em together. It'd be your own Erector Set Computer!
