I want to make some desktop icons , pretty plain with some text on the front, so that there all matching , any body know of any easy to use free software many thanks

The Gimp will do icons, but it really is not that easy to use with Icons (I still have problems getting .ico files to export as a combination of multiple resolutions properly). Other than that, I can think of some editors that you have to pay for, but that's not meeting your criteria. :think:

if can create what you want in .png then you can use this website (http://www.convertico.com/) to do the conversion to .ico to use on your desktop. Have used it a number of times and had no problems with it :)

I was just going to suggest using PNG icons.. the quality can be much nicer. :)

Can I just create something in Fireworks save it as a bitmap and then change the file name to .iso and use that I saw a youtube vid where he just created one in paint and used that ?

thats what i use, and its free, will support importing of pictures also
