Just out of curiosity, those of your running windows Seven what are the stats of the comp you have it installed on.
I'm running:
*Celeron 2.8GHz
*1.5 GB ram (but windows 7 shows it as 3GB for some reason???)
*geforce 6200 (forget how much ram, either 256 or 512MB)

I just think it would be interesting to see what you all are runnin it on and who is running it on the lowest spec machine.

It run's fairly well for me w/ a noticeable amount of graphical lag and an occasional hang up. Over all its usable including aero. Media center on the other hand is unusable for me.

how bout you guys?

CPU: Core2 Duo @ 2.00GHz
RAM: 2GB @ 667
Intel Integrated Graphics w/ S3 interface for the monitor

Keep in mind, this laptop config BARELY ran Vista Business stripped down to nothing, couldn't get Aero graphics and it would run hot as hell. With 7 I get almost all of the graphic niceties and incredible performance. It barely uses more than 512 MB of RAM when idling Firefox, Digsby, and Word.

Did you check windows update for drivers? I went on the nvidia site for my card and they had beta drivers that were listed as updates in the windows update, It was actually really easy to do. Maybe yours has something similar?

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who isn't running this on a beast of a computer. Hopefully the performance remains good through the retail release.

like i said, ive ripped the kernel apart, they've used the kernel from server 2008 and stream lined it and removed all the old crap that it has accumulated over the years.

it seems that M$ has listened to us all and decided to make it less demanding on the hardware in a hope to get people to upgrade, that is the main reason i use windows xp on my laptop when its "Designed for windows Vista Premium", it just dosen't cut the mustard.

I have it installed on 2 machines:

Crap Box: (Yes, that's it's name)
AMD Athlon XP1800+
1GB (2x512MB) DDR Generic
256MB NVidia GeForce FX5600XT AGP
120GB Maxtor IDE

Uni Laptop:
Toshiba Portege M200
Pentium M 1.6GHz
2GB (2x1GB) of DDR-400 G-Skill
NVidia GeForce 5200
160GB 2.5" HDD

Both are running fine, and the uni laptop is running a lot faster now than when it was running Vista. btw, tip for low end graphics cards.... turn Aero off.

Also my laptop
AMD QL62 2ghz

Amazingly, the crap VIA test system boots up 7 quicker then my laptop will boot up vista. Both are using the same external hard drive when I was running the tests. Of course, the laptop will boot 7 much quicker then the VIA but thats not the point, it just shows how much of a waist vista is.

I'm running 7 on an added 80Gb IDE drive on the system in My System. Aero seems to work fine with the occasional lag. My tuner card finally has a decent program to run it (Media Center) and will actually record shows! I've installed a bunch of programs including AVG Free and it's still waaaayyyy faster than Vista x64.

I think what he means is when they kill the beta by requiring it to be activated/purchased. The end of the beta period is supposedly in August, so release should be shortly after that.

Yeah, i suppose it's pretty likely that they will cripple any beta copies to force a purchase, but they did the same with Vista and XP. Oh well.. gotta make money somehow.

Yeah, If i didn't have the monthly expenses that i do, it would be a def buy. Oh well, in the meantime KDE 4 is lookin mighty sexy. And i must say... as much as i love the look of 7 i HATE how chunky MS has made the windows borders lately. Maybe its because I got used to the nice minimalistic mac window dressings but i can't stand seeing a windows border more than a hand full of pixels wide... but then i guess they couldn't show off their 1337 transparency effects.

Just managed to install 7, antivirus, all my drivers, do windows update and configure it to my liking in about hour or so, and that includes me playing with it.

Only got one issue, thats NAS access, i can't access my nas boxes through the network, i have to type in the share address

\\nas1\share1 for example, but i've mapped the ones i use so im happy with it, much faster than vista, and i really think if it dosen't go tits up between now and release it will be a good replacement for xp

Luke122
03-18-2009, 11:48 PM
Here's my first post on Windows 7!

Toshiba Satellite P30 - P4 3.33ghz, 1gb ram, ATI Radeon 9700 mobile.

Still updating drivers (video), but everything worked "out of the box". So to speak.

Luke122
03-19-2009, 01:43 AM
Gripe number 1: Drivers for my video dont seem to exist. Radeon 9700.. the Vista 32 ones dont want to work, and ATI doesnt have any drivers for Windows 7 for anything prior to a the 2x00 series.

2. Wifi works out of the box, but the performance is awful. I'm actually cabled in right now to speed up the downloading of drivers.. which turns out isnt going so well.

I'm not giving up yet, just thought I'd stop in and bitch. :D

*EDIT* It looks like I might be out of luck..

luciusad2004

My biggest gripe is that it occasionally Bogs down like crazy when loading programs or popping up the start menu. I'm not sure if its Windows or my computer. Sometimes i start to wonder if its frozen.

Luke122
03-19-2009, 11:23 AM
OK, I finally managed to land a solution that works (so far) for my video driver.

First of all, I had to delete the "detected" driver for the Radeon 9600/9700 in the device manager, so that it was listed as "Standard VGA Device".

Next, I downloaded and attempted to install the Catalyst control center from ATI for a regular 9700 (not the mobility version, which I have). The install failed, but the directory was created and the files dropped into it.. I copied them out to another folder before acknowledging the failure and letting the installer close (and remove the files).

I then rebooted the system, and went to the device manager, and manually installed the driver that I copied out from the failed install, and rebooted again. SUCCESS!!

It took me until 130am, but I managed to get my drivers all installed and working with Windows 7. I now have 1440x900 resolution, and a much more graphically "wowy" UI.

Initial Impressions: It's remarkably lightweight in feel compared to Vista, though I honestly never attempted to run Vista on this notebook, so I cant do a direct comparison. The interface is really slick, I like the object oriented task bar and the ability to call up recently used items/locations very easily.

The control panel is very different, but I like how they made it clean and simple, but can unleash all the options if you go to advanced mode... and there are alot of advanced options!

I'll post more as I play with it. :D

I've had an interesting experience with putting Windows 7. I got a new HDD to install 7 onto, when I initially had Windows 7, I didn't have AHCI on but after I had windows 7 setup, I setup it up in BIOS, this caused windows 7 to BSOD on start up and it couldn't be repaired (not really Windows 7's fault).

The most interesting thing is when I reinstalled Windows 7 with AHCI on. Setup took the normal amount of time but I got stuck on the "Setup is preparing your computer for first use" at first I thought this was just a random error so I formatted the drive again. No, it's no error, but after waiting long enough, it did get past this. After I set up the username etc, I went to go update windows. This is when the fun began. After restarting the machine, I could no longer access windows update (window would freeze) and a lot of other things seemed to freeze as well. I think I may just start from scratch again.

I've found a few more issues so far.

1. My SD card reader doesnt appear in "my computer" with a known working SD card with data on it inserted. In Media Player, the SD card appears on the list of sources, but the files on it are not accessible in any way.

2. When trying to choose a screen saver, the little preview window for the ss starts up, then locks the computer solid. A hard reboot was necessary to get it unstuck. I tried again, and this time just waited to see if it would resume on its own.. and it did, but not before corrupting the graphics driver, and locking me to 640x480 resolution with 8bit color. Installing graphics driver again..

Mapping a letter to it in disk management, in computer management might solve that problem.

Current update: After a fresh install, there is still problems with Windows 7.

If I wait long enough Windows Update will come up but I can't access any drive as when I try to go through Computer, it hangs with the green bar. This is a very strange problem and the first time I've seen it happen. I'm wondering if one of the windows updates did this as it wasn't like this until I updated. I'm going to give it one more reinstall and only do the MP3 Bug fix for now.

That was my first thought, but unfortunately it doesnt appear in the disk management either! I suspect this is a deeper issue..

Media player lists the SD Card as a source, but doesnt give any options as to filesystem or content on it, so I think, "Redmond, we have a problem."

luciusad2004
03-20-2009, 08:06 PM
Anyone in here have any opinions on the "Libraries" feature? I'm not sure how i feel about them. My biggest issue is that they seem to want to force users to use them by making it unnecessarily difficult to actually get to the real folders for Documents, Music, Pictures, etc. I just don't really see the point. It shows all of the folders that you label to show up in that library but why not just dump the folders all in to your My documents folder instead of having them sitting around randomly in your file system. Maybe i just don't get it because i Organize everything as it is. This probably isn't meant for someone like me but more for the "average" user that just dumps all their pictures to a random folder anyway.

Windows 7 blue screened twice on me last night. I have no clue why. I briefly caught a glimpse of something about drivers and something about memory dump. I wish their was someway to pause the blue screen before it rebooted lol.

I don't know why i would start having driver problems now thought, I've been using for a month or so. I'll see if it does it today or not.

There is in XP *EDIT: and Vista*, so there might be in Win7..

In XP: System, Advanced, Startup and Recovery Settings - Take the check out of "Automatically Restart".

Then you can write down the error on the bluescreen and manually restart.

That's a great tip. I'll have to put it into effect once I take out some of my upgraded RAM. I tried to go to 6GBs but neither Vista or 7 (both 64-bit) will boot. I've manually set the timings and voltages to the factory specs but all I get is BSODs on boot. Funny thing is that XP has no problem, most likely due to the fact that it doesn't make it past the 4GB set which is installed in the A channel.
