I was shooting a game last night when a ball came soaring over the press table and caught the left top corner of the screen and pulled it off the table.

See kids, this is exactly why you should stay in your room and play video games and never come out

maybe 1.5 years. I just use it at location shoots to back up the photos on until I get home.

That blows. You might be able to get a replacement screen for pretty cheap. Since you don't need a driver board.

He's got a point kids.
As much as that sucks, I have to admit I laughed a little when I found out you weren't even playing. That's a real kick in the nuts bro, I hope it's covered by insurance, or at least the wayward ball thrower should toss in some money for a replacement.

it is covered under my equipment insurance under my business policy but the deductible is $450 more than the actual scree. No one is liable for this but me. Thats the world of on location photography.

well its time to get out the welder and 1" thick bullet resistant plexi glass :) and put spikes on it so when the ball tried to attack you again it will fail... (fail just like my English :))

Or buy a panasonic toughbook. Once knew a guy who claimed to have ran over one in a Land Rover Discovery without damaging it.
If you had a PanaToughbook, it would have jumped to life and eaten that ball. It would have, somehow, managed a thoughful look while it chewed the basketball using only the keyboard and the latches to hold the lid closed. Then it would have miraculously spat the basketball's mushy remains back onto the court, screamed "I pity the fool" before returning to it's previous state as...just a laptop.
In unrelated news, scientists yesterday claimed to have isolated the part of the brain that takes pleasure out of other people's misfortune. It's brilliant; first, they got 19 students to talk for an hour to more successful students, who had to brag. This allowed them to locate the part of the brain that produces jealousy, which was interestingly the same part that handles physical pain.
Then, they got the same 19 students and got them to read stories about the more successful students having a bad day, and I quote:
They then read a story in which the subject of their envy suffered a series of misfortunes, including food poisoning.
Their scan data showed the mishaps sparked greater activity in the 'reward reaction' part of the brain, which normally lights up when receiving social and financial fortune.
Full story here: Metro isn't a reputable source, but the story seems ligit and It came up first in google. (http://www.metro.co.uk/news/article.html?Jealousy_spot_on_the_brain_identified _by_scientists&in_article_id=539503&in_page_id=34)

EDIT: Sorry If I'm coming across as a dick in this thread. Believe me, I sympathise with you. If you lived any closer to me, I'd repair your laptop for free, assuming we could get you a new screen. Course, it would be novel having a member living near to me. :D (With the exception of XcOM)

Update: Its fixed. Got the screen on ebay for $68 shipped and only took me 20 min to disassemble, clean heat sink, replace crappy thermal grease with AS5 and install the new screen. I also upgraded to 2gb of ram and cleaned about 5oz of crap from the keyboard and surrounding cavity. Its amazing how nasty a laptop can get. Interesting thing to note is that this Vaio has a solid copper CPU cooler where as all of the ones of the same model I have seen on the net have a aluminum one. I did slightly lap and polish the heat sink before adding the as5. I have not noticed an increase in performance as I mostly use the laptop for location shoots or entertainment on trips.
