I'm looking for magnets so I can work on my airsoft gun. Preferably they need to be about 5"x5" or of multiple magnets that will cover this range. I've found a few "rare earth magnets" on ebay but they are a little too pricey.
I have found a single 2x2 magnet for 25 bucks shipped that is supposedly rated for 250lbs of pull. I e-mailed the guy asking if he'd take less... I'd be awesome to get it for 15 or so. It's crazy how expensive magnets are! sheesh...
It'd be cheaper just to post an ad on craigslist or something requesting free burnt out speakers.

You could build an electromagnet by wrapping a spool of wire and connecting it to a power source. It would also give you the option of turning the magnet of.

I think I have some blown speakers out at my parents place (don't ask why). How soon do you need them? I won't be able to make it out there until next weekend at the earliest.

Check out unitednuclear.com. They've got some ridiculously strong magnets there, and their smaller ones are fairly reasonable. In fact, check out their whole website, LOTS of cool stuff to be had. :)

I'm looking for magnets so I can work on my airsoft gun.Could you elaborate? I'm curious now...:D
a single 2x2 magnet for 25 bucks shipped that is supposedly rated for 250lbs of pull.I'm assuming you've handled powerful magnets before, but be careful with anything like that. I've hurt myself with lesser magnets. Two of those magnets with a finger in between can break bones quite easily. The pull force is the attraction force between the magnet and an iron plate. Two magnets together produce about 1.5-2x that...so 375+lbs on a very small surface area. aka: Dangerous!:)
Some of the magnets here are fairly priced:

The 1 in x 1 in x 1/4 in Thick Block, Grade N42 has a pull force of 28lbs...and they are $1.28ea if you order 25 of them. ~$32.00 + $9.00S/H That would give you your entire 5"x5" area. I'm not sure exactly what you have planned, but if it matters, it might be wise to have a bunch of identical magnets instead of several miscellaneous pieces.
