I was digging through my box of semi-broken electronics:

Has old cell phones, cd players that skip, bricked mp3 players, and this:

My old portable DVD player which after one too many drops will no longer read DVDs. However the A/V in functionality still works.

So I decided to gut it an make it a stand alone monitor. I am removing any components is does not need to make it as slim as possible. This includes the dvd drive assembly, the speakers, and a board with some buttons on it that control the dvd functions.

I started disassembling the unit:

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/chaksq/P1030698.jpg

I then tested it hooked up to my PS2:

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/chaksq/P1030704.jpg

It also has a battery, which I would like to still be able to use:
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/chaksq/P1030705.jpg
Working on battery power only:
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/chaksq/P1030706.jpg

I also decided since I dont need the speaker in this to split the A/V cable:
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/chaksq/P1030707.jpg
And I now have a dedicated video cable for this and an audio adapter i can use for something else like my MP3 player:
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/chaksq/P1030708.jpg

Possible uses could be my Mac Classic project:
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/chaksq/P1030697.jpg
A little too small though.

Or I could put it in a case:
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/chaksq/P1030709.jpg
Roughly the space of two drive bays.

The plan for now is to make or modify a cheap picture frame and mount it in that. I might hook it up to my desktop rig and set a slideshow of photos on it.

Well I stopped by the dollar store on my way home from work and picked this up cheap. A little big and kinda plastic, but should be a good start for a new home for the LCD:

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/chaksq/P1030711.jpg

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/chaksq/P1030718.jpg

Also I think I might add the card reader from my canceled project Busy to this. I dont have a need for a full bay device but a card read would be very useful, and this one is thin enough to throw into this project:

I also have a cheap usb hub I could add to this but I dont really need to. Maybe at a later point in time:

Here is a possible mock up pic of the new layout:

Time for the hackzors! ...erm... I mean hacksaw:
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/chaksq/P1030719.jpg
It takes balls to cut up a brand new $133 picture frame, wait... maybe I forgot a decimal point:
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/chaksq/P1030720.jpg
First cut done:

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/chaksq/P1030722.jpg
My frame is now two pieces:

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/chaksq/P1030724.jpg
How I want to mount the LCD:
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/chaksq/P1030725.jpg
Need to trim a bit:
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/chaksq/P1030726.jpg
Much better:

A taste of what it will look like when finished:
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/chaksq/P1030728.jpg
I ran out of time to narrow it tonight. I will finish that soon and then use sandpaper to get it to it's final fit.

Yea it was a $1.13 USD frame and it shows. Might have to give this thing a coat of paint when I finish it.

Another short session of work leaves me with all the major cutting finished. The frame is now roughly in it's final size.
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/chaksq/P1030730.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/chaksq/P1030731.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/chaksq/P1030732.jpg

Next step is to sand it down to the exact size and somehow reattach the two parts of the frame. I haven't entirely decided how I will hold it together. I am thinking model cement with something on the inside to help keep it together.

That was basically what I had in mind for the reinforcement. Only thing is I dont have enough material in the frame to secure screws in, so I will probably just use it to get as much surface area for the model cement.
