View Full Version : Installed Rally Lights on my car today...

because I'm a rally fan and I mod more than just cars.

my car is a 1985 Volvo 245dl. It's what you'd see in the dictionary if you looked under "slow".

Anywho, pics now:

huzzah. I went by Lowes and with a fistful of bolts, nuts and washers, I emerged victorious. Took maybe an hour tops once I got home and it looks beastly now imo.

Enough talking, pics:

And before anybody asks me why I drilled through my plastic bumper and mounted it on there -- I'll have you know that under the plastic is 1/8in of steel that's very sturdy. Those lights shouldn't bounce around.

Thoughts?

The fog lights I had on my old car were just mounted to the plastic bumper cover and were secure enough. Although I apparently installed them too low and knocked one off in a real steep driveway entrance.

I plan on it.

Once I get my rallies wired up properly.

Though for a night shot I could probably get away with a quick improv system where they're just wired right up to the battery. haha.

You should add an entire row of rally lights onto your bumper. You could see through black holes with that much light! :p

These things have somewhat of a rally pedigree despite not being terribly quick - they're tough, and they're RWD, and the turbo models had some get-up-and-go.

I mean, sure, I'm a biased source (mine's an '89 sedan)... still like the earlier ones (like yours) better, though, and wouldn't mind having a wagon.

Anyway, now you've got six little square lights! Beautiful.

The "Lambda Sond" badging on the grille really tops it off - in the words of "Murilee Martin", "I always figured the "Lamda Sond" emblem on these cars meant "Ja, here is the powerful engine for the hoonage, you betcha!" (http://jalopnik.com/346867/1980-volvo-dl). Pity the real meaning isn't so interesting.

Ah, another Volvo geek on the boards.

Yeah, I'm a big rally fan and even though I know they never rallied 245s, it still has that look.

I have a friend who's just bought a 242GT. He's also got an early (early, like 79) 245, and a pre-86 242.

I thought about putting fog lights or rally lights of some sort on my car but just don't think it would flow ever well.

I thought it would be cool if i got square ones and found a way to mount them in the front of the bumper. I would prefer If they were recessed in to the area next to the running lights but thats probably more work than i would know how to do. I think the higher trim levels came w/ fog lights stock, I was considering looking in to what sort of work it would be to bolt on the front bumper from the GT trim and taking a shot at wiring them up.

IDK, part of me thinks it would look bitchin and part of me things it would end up to ghetto. More pics @ my car domain in my sig.

Edit: I didn't intend to use them in any sort of rally or off road situation, my cars not really built for that lol. I just like fog lights, particularly the yellow ones.

That's an awesome idea for trying to get a picture of your own car :D

We have those around here too. Not as prominent, though.

What we do have that's pretty common is for people who just drive through the fastrack lanes (it's like an RFID scanner for paying bridge tolls, very clever, allows you to just drive through the gate without needing to stop or roll down your window) without a fastrack device, it'll snap a pic of your license plate and send it to you.

My sister forgot her Fastrack transponder once and this was when her 'license plates' were still the bits of cardboard that dealers have on new cars... it was funny 'cause we never got a ticket for it. haha.

This 850 wagon has to count for something...

...and there've been a few 240s run in LeMons (http://www.24hoursoflemons.com), too...

Wouldn't mind having those Virgos...

I'd definitely rock an Amazon, or a 140-series, or (one of my dream cars) a P1800ES shooting-brake:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/e4/1973_Volvo_sportwagon.JPG/796px-1973_Volvo_sportwagon.JPG

We never got the 480s here, sadly. They're neat little cars.

I've never been a big fan of the 2001- S60/V70, personally. Too round for me. I do quite like the 850/S70, though (my dear departed grandmother had an '00 XC; brilliant car, but I never drove it hard enough to engage the turbo) and, of course, the 7x0/9x0 before it.

I really like the 1800 and PV544 (i know, they're two completely different cars). I was actually going to get a PV544 for $1800 off of CL except I didn't have the money at the time, so I ended up getting a 245 for $700. Still happy.

Also, I was going to be getting a 744ti for $350 off of CL but the mum said no, even though I had all the money, towing arrangements, everything all set up.

heh, nice 240s. are they flathoods or post-'86 hoods? pre-86 flathoods are sex, even if my 245 has a coffinhood and I love it like that.

Dude, you should register over at TurboBricks.com. Volvo 'performance' community but it's really just a ton of volvo geeks having a good time. Check it out. Most people there have a 2xx or 7xx, so you'll fit right in.

I'm planning on doing quite a bit of stuff to my 245... bigger rims (wider, bigger diameter, the whole shebang. hoping for tethys if I can get 'em or maybe iPd pegasus replicas would look pretty good too), iPd lowering springs (or cut overload springs), a turbo + intercooler, new camshaft, free-er flowing exhaust system, etc. just get the thing to ~130hp on it's current engine. My overall goal is ~200hp which I know I can do with a turbo motor swap (I was thinking B230FT, but now I'm thinking B21FT), cams, bigger exhaust and a little fuel system tuning. I think 200hp in a car that, right now has close to 80 will be pretty fun.

EDIT:

Or, I might just leave my 245 the reasonable daily driver it is and buy a beater 244ti, strip it, give it more power and build a cheap rally/autoX car or something.

Speaking of fun Volvos, a guy I know just bought a 242GT and I get to go work on it tomorrow. I'm pretty stoked.

Nah, they ain't flathoods - I love the coffinhood just as much anyway. The one I'm fixing up is that same Swedish-flag flat blue as most earlier 240s, but it's an '89 (they both are, actually), so if I want to, I could probably find an earlier flathood for it.

Aside from the 14" steelies, I'm honestly pretty happy with its external appearance. (Okay, to be fair, I'd love to stick a set of Hydras on it, but it's not bad as-is.) Oh, and it's getting a yellow cross painted on the roof (http://jalopnik.com/387340/) eventually, of course.

The B230F has 114 horsepower and 136 lb/ft of torque from the factory, but I imagine some of them have left the corral by now. I'm considering adding the turbo/intercooler as well, but it's not like I really need it... maybe someday.

I'm leaving the suspension as-is for now. Ground clearance is crucial up here in the wintertime, and I'll be losing enough clearance in the back with the hundred pounds of sand I'll keep in the trunk. It's not too squishy yet, anyway; if it starts bothering me, then I'll do something about it.

I'd heard of TurboBricks but never really bothered checkin' 'em out. Think I'll join up.

+rep for lettin' me know I'm not alone - bring back pics of that 242!

EDIT: Luke, the Stratos is great. Gotta be my favorite car in DiRT - it's a rocket-propelled phallus of awesome.

Yeah, I wouldn't turn down most any European car from about the mid-'90s on back.

I saw a Volvo 144S in great shape this afternoon on the way home from school; hadn't seen one in years. It was the standard turquoise color that quite a few of them were painted - either this color (http://home.swipnet.se/oldtimers/14270.jpg) or a nice reproduction. Wished I had my camera...
