After a bunch of research I decided to get an Asus Eee PC 1000HE (http://www.buydig.com/shop/product.aspx?sku=AS1000HEBLU002X). It's got a battery life of up to 9.5 hours! I will be upgrading it to 2GB of RAM once it arrives. Out of box specs are:
10 inch LED backlit WSVGA screen (1024x600)
Intel ATOM N280 processor 1.66GHz
1GB DDR2 memory
160GB HDD built in plus 10GB Eee Online Storage
9.5 hour battery
With battery weighs 3.2 lbs
It's got a BIG standard laptop hard drive which I would like to change to about a 4GB SSD. Do SSD's have SATA connections so it's easy to swap out?

Also, it says that it has a single slot for DDR2-667. I assume I can use DDR2-800 when I upgrade it to 2GB right?

"5,400RPM 160GB Seagate Momentus SATA" - The Tech Report Review (http://techreport.com/articles.x/16451)
Just by going off of Newegg, it looks like the cheapest SATA SSD drive is 16GB and not much more for 32GB. Although I'm not sure what the difference between SATA and SATA II is, but the prices are about the same either way so best be safe than sorry and just go with plain SATA?
By the way, you won't see a performance boost unless you drop in a pretty penny for something like an Intel drive. But if you just want to go SSD for the quietness and reliability, then by all means go right ahead. Just thought I'd let you know just in case, because that was my misunderstanding with SSD's. I thought they were all faster than HDD, but apparently not, from what I've been told. (From Wikipedia, it seems SATA 1.5GB/s maxes out at 150MB/s, whereas going off of newegg the cheap SSD drives are usually below 50MB/s. Although SATAII goes up to normal speeds and a bit faster for their cheap drives. Might want to figure out if you can use SATAII then! From what I've read, it seems there is a jumper setting that you have to mess around with or something.)
DDR2-800 will work just fine, but I don't know if it will run 800 or not. My guess is that it will only run at 667, unless maybe you change some settings around in the BIOS?
Nice Netbook by the way!

What can you do with it to actually get 9.5hrs? Standby?
I have the HP Mini 1030NR and can get good battery life for surfing the net but watching a movie I get about 2-2.5hrs.

According to the review I posted above, it gets 6 hours of media playback before dying.
But to achieve full rated battery life, you usually have to turn everything off and put everything on low. But even with everything on it should still be able to get 7 hours at least. (which the review backs up, they got about 7 hours with everything on.)
Damn, TGS. Can I have your netbook PRETTY PLEASE? lol :P

A few responses here, I think when you see 4 gb ssd on the other laptops I think it might mean free space, unless the os the run it really that tiny.
On the ram question, I don't know you would have to see the board I know my older desktop didn't support 800 but used 667 so it might not be possible to run it at full speed.
Can I ask what your gonna use it for?

Actually I just want one. I have no actual use for it. That's why I'll eventually get an SSD drive for it, because I doubt I'd ever need more than 40GB's, but that can wait a year or so when they get a lot cheaper. I already ordered the DDR2-800 RAM so I'll se if it works, if not I'll get the DDR2-667 instead. The DDR2-800 was only $17 on Newegg so no biggie. Hell, I could probably sell it to someone for more.
When it comes I will be doing a review and I will definitely test the battery so stay tuned.

You can use DDR2 800. It will just run at the DDR2 667 speed.

OK, I still haven't received my Netbook, but I'm sure it'll be here soon. Newegg has 64GB OCZ SSD's (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231220) for a little over $100. It's a SATA II drive, so I'm still not sure if it'll work for the Netbook or not. If it does, I WILL be getting it soon. I'm sure that'll up my battery time too.

I think the netbook might take a PCIe SSD.

Uh, one of the reviewers on Newegg says he swapped out his MSI Wind hard drive with the SSD. So I guess it does work

Depends on the laptop, some netbooks only have ZIF connections, some have both SATA and ZIF. A netbook modding forum will tell you what you have to work with.

Its a Seagate Momentus (SATA).
I did a bit more research on SATA II, and from what I can tell it is backwards compatible. So you shouldn't run into any problems with using an SATA II SSD with a SATA I motherboard. I don't know if netbook motherboards are any different than desktop motherboards though, so I suppose there is a chance it won't work. You could always just return it if it doesn't work though.

True. I think I might be doing this within a week

Just out of curiosity, you should record your current boot time and then compare it with the boot time with the SSD. Unless you don't plan on using the same OS, because then it would be kind of pointless. But it might be interesting to see the results.

It comes with Home and I have Pro. I don't know what the differences would be, but I've seen some pretty fast boot times with SSD

Wow. My Netbook arrived and it's pretty cool. It came preloaded with Star Office and bluetooth software which I deleted. I then loaded every picture and video I have ever taken of my kids (3.1GB) to My Pictures and it only took 3 minutes. Curious about the speed I installed Auslogics System Info and it says that the Intel Atom N280 is a Dual Core! Nowhere in the paperwork/online specs does it say anything about it being dual core. I went into msconfig, boot tab, and advanced options and it shows two processors too.

The N330 is the Dual Core version of the Atom. The Atom is still based on the x86 architecture so it does have Hyperthreading as Nevermind already said. So now you know its time for some pictures!!! :D

Great, now I'm a little jealous. My Samsung NC10 will have an N270, which is only single core.
EDIT: Nevermind, they're all single core. I just looked it up somewhere more reliable than Wikipedia (the Intel page) (lol intel from Intel) and mine also happens to hyperthread.

Which color did you get? I've only seen the Blue one in pics. All the real ones coming in are black.

I got blue, but there's white and black too. The box had more colors listed, but there's none of those online

NOTE TO SELF!
The Asus Netbook does NOT take DDR2-800 RAM. It came in today and I dropped it in and it only shows up as 1GB. I guess I have to use DDR2-667 :(

Was it a single 2gb stick?
That could be your problem
TheGreatSatan
03-18-2009, 10:42 PM
It only has one slot and CAN be upgraded to 2GB, so it has to have a single 2GB stick. The 667MHz FSB is the problem
I actually already ordered another 2GB stick of DDR2-667 for my In-Laws HP laptop so I'll just use that one for the netbook and the DDR2-800 stick for theirs.

Were the chips only on one side, or both?

You might possibly have to change something around in the Bios? I think I read that somewhere when I was searching around the net about whether it would work or not.
Update: Found this in one the newegg review sections...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220281
Pros: Put in Asus EEE 1000 HE. Started computer and system information still showed original amount of ram .99GB. Shut down and on next start pressed F2 a few times during start up to enter BIOS, Once in BIOS the Main page then showed 2048MB of memory, pressed F10 and enter. Computer then booted and showed the 1.99GB in system information. Once recognized it works as advertised.
Cons: Had to access BIOS to get to work. Probably the EEE's fault.
Other Thoughts: I think for the EEE 1000HE, it is not a bad idea to get the higher bus speed (800 vs 667) because the EEE has an overclocking feature.
