My mom and I just ordered this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834131027

It's a Samsung NP-NC10. A friend of mine's dad has a blue one that I got to use a few times and I really liked it. Because my computer blew up (it didn't really, something in it just died ><) I actually got to order it. I need something to take with me places to do schoolwork, anyways. After I get a job I'll replace whatever died on me (if it was the mobo I'll save up for a tricore AMD and just sell my E6320 to my bro) and then have a badass computer again. /a bit of rambling

But yeah, I'm excited. It arrives either Wednesday or Thursday. :D

Oh. I found out why my dad's was more expensive. He had a 9-cell battery and N wireless. I love the keys on that netbook.

That explains a lot, lol. Poopy, so I won't be able to use that laptop out in the gazebo.

Sweet, let us know how you like the laptop after you get it. Stuff like battery life and how well built it is.

These things are solid from up-close. Can't wait to see his though.

Yeah, other than the fact that it's well made I particularly like the fact(s) that it will be a) black and b) mine. :D:D:D

Why is it so damn expensive?

I'm not sure, but I'm glad that I didn't get the one with wireless N as it would have been another $160.

I do like the almost-full-sized keyboard. That'll be helpful for 3am beyond-last-minute paper-writings...or not as I won't be procrastinating THAT badly hehe.

Really good question! You can get Satellite from Best Buy for the same price with a bigger screen. Not endorsing Satellites just saw them today when I went to get a couple Papa Roach CDs. You have to walk past the laptops to get to anything in Best Buy.

One of the main reasons I got this particular one is because a friend of mine's dad owns one and it felt really sturdy and overall well made. Perhaps I paid more for this as the quality is higher? On the bright side it's not a Macbook Air(head).

For that much you should at least have gotten Wireless-N. Is the RAM expandable to 2GB?

Yeah, the RAM is expandable to 2GB.

I'm on it right now, this is a pretty sweet little machine. Now to finish customizing it the way I want it to be.

It seems like the only real difference is weight and form factor. The Samsung model is almost half a pound lighter and about a third of an inch thinner. Its pretty ridiculous, but those are pretty influential factors when a company is determining a price range for a product. A product being lighter and thinner are pretty desirable aspects with portable computers.

Just from going off of looks alone, they both look like pretty sturdy devices, but if I had to guess, I would say the Samsung looks more solidly built. So build quality could also play into the price difference here. Especially when you consider how high quality of a brand Samsung is (especially with their televisions), so its probably a pretty safe bet that Samsung has invested more into their product (build quality wise) than the mass netbook producer Asus has.

Also, aesthetically, I like the Samsung NC10 much more than the Asus 1000HE, which I think most people would agree with, and since Samsung knows that they have a better looking product, and thus more desirable, they know that people will fork out a bit more for their product, which they do, which is why its not more competitively priced. Possibly anyways, that may or may not play a factor in the price here.

That, and I'm sure Samsung doesn't make anywhere near as much with their netbook line like Asus does, so that probably plays into it somehow.

I've tried out both the EeePC and the Samsung netbooks and I really like having an almost-full-sized keyboard. That and I think the screen on this one might be somewhat larger. Lemme list the few things I've noticed and liked so far.

-93% keyboard
-6hrs+ battery life
-I rendered a fractal in 8min (it was 1024x600 with 1000 quality, 0.5 filter radius, and 2x oversample or whatever) in Apophysis.
-It is very light.
-Well designed, feels sturdy.
-Fairly fast load times and all.

I've wanted a laptop/netbook for a few years and it's nice to finally have one. This thing feels like it'll last a long time, especially so if taken care of. I've decided to go ahead and use their backup software so I don't have to worry about it crashing on me or me screwing it up.

The Asus has all of that too plus Wireless-N. I've only delt with Samsung TV's and printers. Their printers suck, especially the lasers, but their TV's are good. All that matters is that you're happy.:D

Exactly.

I'm glad you like your netbook, too.

There is only one way to settle this... A NETBOOK BATTLE-BOT MOD ROYAL! ...Oh come on, you know that would be cool! :p

Just curious TGS, what model samsung printer did you have and how long ago? Their new stuff (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Productcompare.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=50001077%2040000630&Manufactory=1077&bop=And&SpeTabStoreType=0&CompareItemList=N82E16828112086,N82E16828112089,N8 2E16828112125,N82E16828112126) looks pretty slick and seems to be doing pretty good and on the whole they seem to be doing pretty good review wise (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=50001077%2040000630&Manufactory=1077&bop=And&SpeTabStoreType=0&Order=PRICE). I only ask because I was considering saving up and buying one of those new ones for my fathers birthday (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16828112089) later this year, heck, even I kind of want one just for how cool they look. lol

I don't own one. I work in retail and we recently clearanced out about 10 of them and at least 7 were returned for multiple reasons within a few days
