View Full Version : Mounting Plexiglass Over The Motherboard

Hey everyone. I've seen a few mods out there that have plexiglass covering the motherboard so all you see are the tops of the peripheral cards, memory, cpu cooler, etc. I am building an enclosure to house all of my water cooling equipment, (pump, radiator, & res) and it looks like I'll have a piece large enough to hide my motherboard. I'd like to know how I would go about mounting the plexiglass and what parts I'd need to do this?

Thanks everyone!

Check out some of the posts by Defyant, he's got it down to a science!

You could use really long standoffs, like 1" to 1*½".

Any idea where I can find these? I've have literally spent the day looking through defyant's posts and searching the web like crazy.... I think standoffs are probably the way, but now I can't find "long" ones.

Thanks for the replies

Actually if you work this backwards you could get some very small threaded rods - like M5 or 6-32 in the US and whip it up with a nut on the bottom of the motherboard tray, nut on the top of the MB tray, length you need with a nut under the MB and another nut on top of the MB.
Don't like the look of the threaded rod? small alum or brass tube from the model railroad shop slipped over the rod makes the spacer.

Yeah, what he said. Add some chrome or brass capnuts to the top and you've got a very clean look.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I think I have found my solution...

I will use regular standoffs, http://www.techadvice.com/help/Products/C/ta22140.gif under the motherboard.

Then, I will use the male side of a Male to female, 6-32. 1.25" long aluminum hex standoff to mount the motherboard.

Then use thumb screws

http://www.puresilence.co.uk/catalog/images/case-thumb-screws-black.jpg

to mount the plexiglass to the female side of the 1.25" standoff. I ordered 40 standoffs as they were BY FAR the cheapest price I could find. Only 17.5 cents each... Also, if I find that 1.25" is too short, I can put 2 of the standoffs together to get a length of 2.5".

 And I have one right down the street from me. I can't believe I didn't think to look there. No matter. My standoffs came in the mail today and the fit perfectly to the mobo standoffs and the thumb screws. Now I gotta cut the plexi to make room for the cards and water lines. Thanks again everyone for your help! +rep to you all
