View Full Version : Laptop abusers!

You've heard about them. You've met them. You've seen their handy work.
Oh dear, it's one of those people who should not have a computer unless they have a license. My sister included. I've yet to work out why they think that hitting the computer will fix it either.
The reason I started this thread is because my sister has managed to kill yet another laptop through abuse. Over the years, she has had the most laptops out of the entire family. I think this is her 6th laptop (each laptop has lasted about a year before major issues) in about 8-10 years. Her current laptop she has managed to break: The power connector which the AC adapter is meant to plug into the laptop, the wireless, possibly parts of the motherboard, and most of her keyboard. Every time her laptop breaks (mainly the wireless not connecting) I'm sent to fix it but I think the poor laptop has reached it's limit.
Share your stories, I'm sure there are going to be a few gold ones.

My family has had its share of ****ty bottom-line cheapo laptops. I think we have about four Dells and a couple HPs laying around because they randomly died due to drivers not working or things just going bad. It's quite ridiculous as I was almost forced to try and fix them and I seem to be seen as better with computers than I am, lol.
But yeah, if you buy a laptop, get something better than the bottom-end ones. They don't work.

I mean if you're getting anything at all... didn't say anything about abusing them until they die. It's just that these bottom end ones seem to be dead when you purchase them.
Hmm... maybe you should get her one of those cardboard box display "laptops," lol.

What's funny is after breaking the 3rd Dell, someone said: "Hey let's buy another Dell!"

I second that notion. Though it will cost more, if you value your time and sanity then it will be worth it.

My wife's boss is in this same category. He can't understand technology to save his life, yet he's a pharmacist. Most times he can be found beating on the equipment in the pharmacy, although he has been known to kick the self check out lanes as well.
I keep waiting for him to break a bone or three, the way he beats on ****.

In my family it's my sister. She spends most days after school camped out in the living room with the dog and her laptop. It's currently a Toshiba Satellite, which was purchased without consulting me, and oh the stories that it could tell. Items that have been replaced under the normal and extended service plans include the mobo, two DVD drives, the hard drive, and the AC plug and cord multiple times. Probably my favourite was one of the DVD drive replacements when she knocked the laptop of a chair with the tray open and snapped the tray clean off. She's looking to upgrade as the warranty is about to expire and I'm going to be involved in the purchasing process this time so as to minimize the future problems I'll encounter. I may be getting the old one so I'll edit in some pics if I do.

my teacher had to fix a laptop that someone at my school had forced the power cord in so hard it snapped the power connector clean off the board. So he soldered it back on. And the kid snapped it off again. The laptop was also missing a key, it was his own laptop, why would he pull off a key?

I once had to service an Acer that belonged to a 12 year old girl. It was a $300 special with Vista and 512mb ram... she would often get impatient with it taking too long to do something, so she would turn it off. Guess what failed first?

Hehe.. that was second. ;) First thing was the hdd.. bad sectors everywhere! After I replaced it the first time, I suggested a ram upgrade, and that made things a bit better. A few months later I got called again.. this time she had THROWN IT ACROSS THE ROOM. I didnt even bother looking at it.

I know the perfect computer for her: one of those cardboard display models from a furniture store, lol

If my kid threw her laptop across the room the next one she'd get would be purchased with her own money once she had a job.

That's exactly what I told them. "Dont spend any money fixing it. If she threw it, she can buy a new one herself."
