I got a new seagate 1TB (ST31000333AS CC1H) HDD last Friday and it clicks when the system starts up (this doesn't both me) but today it's started randomly click for short intervals at random times. I'm wondering if I should be worried or if this is normal for this firmware.

I would return it as defective for a replacement. I don't own a 1TB drive, but usually a clicking sound isn't good. I had a WD 160GB do this and it worked for a short time and would click on boot and at random times, then it just stopped working. I didn't have a chance to use it and lose anything before RMA'ing it. Before you fill that and the HD fails. I would replace it.
Article on that HD and a protective coating Seagate put on.

I agree with return it. I bought a seagate 500GB drive, and from day one itd make a chirping noise when it owuld read/write and a whine when youd shut down the computer. Well everyone told me not to worry, so I didnt. well it crapped out on me randomly one day. now I'm struggling to find a data recovery company that can get my stuff off for a reasonable price. and warranty it of no use, as they trash the drive and send me a new one, so my stuffs as good as gone, wich is not going to happen. and they're data recovery service is rediculously expensive as well

Will the drive power up/spin up at all?

Glad to help and sorry about your drive. Better to know about it before it fails on you though. :D
You guys could just swap the platters to a new HD in your "clean room". lol Doesn't everyone have one by now? lol

Does it see it in the bios and/or is it your OS disk or just a storage disk.

Funny thing is, the new drive is being used as an OS drive. I got a new Seagate 1TB HDD for my father yesterday, seems I might have to borrow it.

I understood the Seagate 1TB drives had some reliability issues, anyway? Beyond Outlaw's link (+rep for finding that, didn't realize there were multiple problems) this (http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/374/1050374/seagate-barracudas-7200-11-failing) doesn't look good (and as far as I know, when not discussing video cards, the Inquirer's pretty reliable).

Outlaw, finally looked at that link and a couple of the sounds sound similar to what I've been hearing. The computer is off until I can plug in another drive and make a duplicate of the failing drive. This is the first time I've ever had this happen with a seagate drive.

I had a 40gb drive in a compaq I had in high school that clicked for 5 years. came that way out the box. On the other hand I bought a WD 500gb when they first dropped the price on them to $119 like 2 years ago and it clicked for 2 days and crapped out.

I still wouldn't trust it with data I plan to keep. If it were just a gaming rig with save files, maybe, but some of the games now-a-days takes up so much room on a HD, its not worth risking all the dl time or play time for a junk HD. I also have a HD which I think is 40GB also in a Gateway that will click randomly and even make a whirring noise but still boots windows. Oddly enough, I used it for a CS Server/s lol. Talk about quality. lol. And I think they were the first to release (not create) the 1TB drive http://www.tomshardware.com/news/seagate-1tb-drive,4068.html. Might have just been in a hurry then and never fixed any of the issues.

Well either way, I need to duplicate the drive tonight as I can easily return it tomorrow. But the drive replaced 2 320GB drives... so it has quite a bit of data on it.

Sounds like you have a little file transferring to do, lol GL with that! Hopefully it will hang on long enough to throw it through seagates window... rrrr set it on their doorstep. lol jk

If you can, I would get it replaced with a WD. They're more expensive, but far more reliable. I think Seagate tried to hit that higher storage capacity too quickly and ended up with hit and miss products.

All of my other HDDs are seagate. Seagate is fine, this is just one of those things that happen every so often.

Just rang MSY (And got shocked that they anwered the call the first time I rang... that's a near impossible task) and they've had some drives come back but they said they could just exchange the drive if I bring it back with my reciept. Need to quickly get my data off tonight.

Oh bugger... actually it's not my new HDD, it's the one I got after my exams last semester. I can get it replaced easily, just I have to wait.
Currently attempting to get all my data off. It's stopping every so often (and clicking) so it's definately that drive.
