View Full Version : make your 9800gtx+ into a gts250!
well now.. thought ive seen it all (not really but it sounds great), but this!
many review sites discovered that the nvidia gts250 really isnt a new card, but just a 9800gtx+ with a different bios!
already got a 9800gtx+ ? or 2 then use this guide and get a gts250 instead:)

There isn't any real improvement by flashing it afaik, and you probably void your warranty. The GTS250 just lowered power consumption a bit and chopped the board back an inch and a half.
The comparisons I saw that showed the gts250 just beating the 9800gtx+ had higher clocks and had 1gb ram compared to 512mb.
The only thing you get here would be the gts250 name to pop up in windows. I don't see any real improvements otherwise, as you gain none of the things that actually made the gts250 pcb better. At least that's the way I see it, but good find nonetheless.
Edit: And, I was under the understanding that the 512mb version of the gts250 could run sli with the 9800gtx+ without having anything flashed. Pretty sure I saw that mentioned in the articles from cebit.

I've read a few reviews saying that there was a *slight* performance/efficiency gain from flashing to the 250, and that the card itself ran a little bit cooler..
If you have a 9800gtx+ already, this might be a cool thing to try. :D
Hey.. we have one on the shelf here at the store.. hmmm..

I have one but I don't intend to risk doing this. I can't really see a major benefit of doing this.

Yeah there is no major benefit and there is a chance you could bork your card. I remember doing this back in the day with turning my 6800gt in to a 6800 ultra.
