I heard about this story today on yahoo news's front page. Apparently a malicious worm is set to perform activities on April 1. It's supposed to be bad. Make sure your system has antivirus up-to-date and running. There's also a 250k bounty on the author of the virus.

Yikes!

Yeah. I'm probably paranoid, but I think im going to be unplugging my PC on April 1.

Hmm... I suppose we're alright if we just go to sites that we know we can trust? Hopefully it's just a massive April Fool's joke... hopefully.

The thing is, it uses newer technologies such as "cloud computing," and they are thinking that a few thousand URL servers being infected could become more. The combined computing power is going to be used for something. The security experts say they don't know what though.

Perhaps he wants to make a ridiculously huge fractal and not wait three years for it to finish?

If only it was something that simple..

The honest truth is that something like this could be the mother of all DDoS attacks. Imagine how much traffic this could generate! The entire internet would grind to a halt.. yoiks...
Lol.. "Here's a tip.. dont fly on April 1st."

I suppose this targets win32 users? If this went far enough, the writer of the program could easily have a large brute force machine. Think Folding@Home size.

Does anyone know how or were you pick up this worm? I'm currently paranoid about it but I only visit a select few trusted websites and don't use any sort of P2P filesharing.

On the other hand I'm quite curious to see what happens on April 1st. I might be installing Linux again if its bad lol.

From what I've read about this in the past week is the Conflicker C is the version that's infected the least amount and is the only one to trigger on April 1. CNN's article: http://edition.cnn.com/2009/TECH/03/24/conficker.computer.worm/index.html

They make it sound worse then it is according to other sites I've read but it's still probably going to be a threat! If you don't get much malware already I don't think you have too much to worry about but if you go to a bunch of sketchy sites or lots of random pr0n sites you definately have a higher chance of infection. Looking for more good articles on this will update if I find the ones I read before.

I think the biggest April fool's will be nothing happening on the first.

I agree with TGS. But unfortunately most Enterprises can't take the chance. :(

I agree, nothing will happen on the first. I'm placing my bets on the 15th.

Nothing like a little chaos on tax day.

Meh, April 1st, can't trust anything on the internet marked on that, or for that day (see Slashdot on Wednesday of this week). The only malware/viruses that scare me are the ones that "auto p0wn" (require no user interaction) Windows (e.g., blaster, within seconds of connecting to the internet you would be infected (even on pathetic 28.8k that I had at the time)). From what I can tell, this is not that type of worm, therefore I'm not super concerned.

Well thats comforting. I can finally stop being paranoid. I read about the worm and instantly went to check for updates and started deleting all of my private data.

Well it's the 1st, what's come of it?

Oh, nothing (http://tech.yahoo.com/news/ap/20090401/ap_on_hi_te/tec_conficker_countdown)

Maybe it's one of those "boy cried wolf" type things.
