So the fiance and I paid to rent Lost Season 1 as we have never seen it and heard it was decent.
Anyways, disk won't play past episode 2, and the rest of the season is scratched to hell as well. Frustrating.
Do you treat rentals poorly simply because you don't own them? Another reason? Or do you treat them as well as you would your own?

I haven't rented any movies for a number of years now (back when everybody had a VCR and had all of their movies on VHS tapes), but I always treated them as I would treat my own.

See, my brothers treat their disks like trash, and I've never understood it. None of my retail disks have a single scratch, at least created by me. My cousin once tossed one of my disks out of my 360 onto the console and I literally almost ripped his eyes out.
I just don't understand tossing disks around and leaving them out as coasters and such. Was hoping someone could shed some perspective lol.
I'm starting to question renting movies, as when it's all said and done I could have bought them for the effort/money spent trying to get a decent set of disks. Anyone have this issue?

I do my best to respect things, whether or not I own them. My brothers have borrowed and misplaced about $100 worth of games of mine just recently... our XBox was broken by the little kids in our neighborhood that decided to leave it on for eight hours one day with a disk in the drive and it actually melted the plastic over the label and destroyed the drive, lol. People are just too disrespectful.
I try to treat all of them with proper card, whether I won them or not. However, my brother seems to absolutely disrespect any disc, including my own. Which is now why with some of my Wii games, I have discs with a bunch of crap all over them, missing manuals, and missing cases and all kinds of things. Even if I told him to take the disc out every time, put it in the case, and put it away. It takes an extra couple of seconds, but he was never able to do it.

this is why whenever i rent something... i get the (insert video rental store name here) to check the discs... asmuch as i can appreciate the capacity available in media such as DVD or CD.... i gotta say... they suck for any form of protection.... none of my disks have a single scratch on them.. i take very good care of them all.. but it is a chore to do it all the time...

The other week I went to 4 different video stores to rent this movie called "Solaris" finally found a copy at a local rental place and after spending $5 on a 3 day rental of a movie thats over a year old I get home to find out that it is scratched beyond repair. It looks like someone took some 80 grit to it. Took it back to the store and they ran it through a worn out disk dr. Told me to try it again. Took it back and still didnt work. Took it back to the store and traded it for another movie. Got on ebay and bought the movie for $.99 and $3 shipping.

I treat most everything like I treat my own. Pretty much my car is the only exception, because I don't care if my car looks like crap so long as it's comfortable and runs. As far as everything else is concerned, though, I take good care of it. especially discs. =p

Ya, I'll have to try and exchange it for another one today. I don't even have one of those disk refinishers as I've never needed one personally lol.
Back when I was young I bought Final Fantasy 9 and there was a huge gouge right out of the box brand new. They said I did it, but it was literally just opened. It always died out at the tornado scene. A bit of clear candle wax and some hand buffing later and it worked beautifully and never had an issue again.
But I'm not going through that for 14 disks (2 seasons) just to give them back lol.

I had a friend who would just forget they had the movies and they'd end up all over the place and their dog would play with them. They ended up buying many a movie from the rental places.
I take care of the movies I rent b/c I know what it's like to get a scratched disk and it's a major pain.
If people borrow my stuff and it comes back scratched to hell they buy me a new one (happened with a DVD season we owned). Anybody who wrecks something they borrow needs to man up and do the right thing regardless if they are family, sister wrecks something she doesn't get to borrow something until she replaces what she broke. If I happen to wreck something of someone elses I replace it simple as that.

really fine-grit non-gel toothpaste works very well for cleaning discs. also, they smell m.inty fresh. I, personally, use Colgate.
yes, m.inty (minus period), is on the censored words list. don't ask me why
