The Great Satan's PC Component Modding Contest

No cost to enter. No admission fee. This is a PC component modding contest. Anything that you use with your PC, such as a Mouse, Keyboard, video card, fans, fan grills, USB devices (or any household item that can be modded to run on USB), printers, scanners, cooling systems, memory, etc, can be modded.

Worklogs in one of the below forums is not required, but you do have to be a member in good standing with one of said forums to enter.

You have 30 days from today (29 Jan 06) to complete your project. You must announce your intentions of entering within this contest thread and post any questions related thereof.

One question? Would repairing your old broken mother board be said to be a mod?

Only if you're changing something entirely. For instance replacing a capacitor is not modding because the motherboard had one before.

That's why I'm hoping people will do worklogs.

No. They are not PC components.
Technically an XBox is a PC with a different BIOS :p :D

Full case is out. It's gotta be a fan grill or PSU or something. And yeah an X-Box is a computer, but it's not called a computer, it's a gaming platform

Nothing with cases. Something that can be purchased; a panel may be purchased, but I doubt it. Yes, since power buttons can be bought, it can be entered.

Judging

Judging will be based on overall modding. When the contest is completed, I will post a thread on all four participating sites:

. . .with all the entries pics and then let everyone vote.

The highest voted winner of each site will then be polled together. Of the final four, a winner will be chosen by the people again. This way it doesn't seem unfair by who is picked as winner.

ok, ive got my mod all planned out, it should be finished in time for the dead line, only problem is, ill need to take a small video for people to get how cool it is, anyone know where i could find video hosting?

Im going to try to enter this! Even though im a TOTAL rookie and will prolly just make a mess of screws and plastic and then give up and leave it all over my bedroom.
But I will still try!
Im going to try a keyboard mod :)
A worklog might not be avaliable though as I will have a limited amount of time to work on this due to exams and coursework and other crappy school stuff!
But Im going to go for a smashed up look :D

How extensive could your worklog be?

1.) open window

3.) gather pieces

You'd be surprised, my method was almost as destructive...

You see, I am 16, and it is a fact that 16 year olds have no money. And if they do they spend it on beer, or RAM. And so I have no tools. Therefore I make sure that everything I want to cut is plastic, then I slap on my respirator, heat up a box-cutter over a lighter or the kitchen hob, and cut through the plastic like highly toxic butter! :D For holes, I heat up a screwdriver!
For smashed up keyboard theme, I attack it with a pair of rusty pliers. The one thing that I DID manage to get hold of, was a soldering iron! So I decided to try my hand at soldering :D Anyway, Here's a taster of what my entry is going to be like, it is NOT FINISHED YET! but it will be in the next few days.

Man, if I had put all the money I spent on beer and... um... other illicit substances... when I was a teenager into computer hardware, I'd have... well, a huge pile of obselete hardware. LOL

Ive been working hard on this one! I REALY should have been doing my photography A-level coursework, which was due in today, but nevermind!
Before I attacked it:

The thing in the top left is a fully manuverable light, which you can use for typing in the dark (Yes, I know that the keys have no letters on them, but it was a good idea at the time! :D) The light is also useful for lighting your face while on webcam in a dark room. The lense on the end lets you use it for both purposes at the same time. I dont have a pic of it finished with the light on 'cause I ran out of batteries and have none left! :(
Edit: Oh and I just realised that the scrratched/worn paint might look like i have just scratched and worn the paint, but it is actualy silver paint, so no damage to the main paintjob was needed.
But heres a pic of it half way with the light on:

It also has a UV cold cathode bulb across the top of it inside the keyboard, with a transformer inside the keyboard. The power wire will run through the normal keyboard wire, but I havn't got the time, or capabilities to do that at the moment! I must go and do my coursework or I will be chucked off the course! You got me in trouble! hahah!

Edit: Oh, and by the way, I think that I deserve extra credit for this due to the fact that I temporarily fused my thumb to my index finger while trying to fix the connection of two broken coldcathode power wires whilst the power was on. My whole room stinks of burnt flesh and my thumb has a yellow and brown circle on the end of it where the electricity fried it! It actualy fused the skin of my thumb and index finger together but I was too busy screaming swear words to even think about taking a photo!

before i go and take video of my mod, i want to make sure that its ok to submit video of my mod in aciton. i should have asked when i was asking about finding video hosting, which i did find. its just that ill be using some lighting effects that cant really be appriciated with a still photo. ill even take still photos and turn them into a gif if i have to. whatever you think is fair to the rest of the contestants.

i can produce pretty much and endless assortment of patterns, but i just wanted people to get the idea that the lights arent just on or off, so i didnt bother making up videos for all the ones i like

Just a reminder to make sure all entries are posted within the contest thread. I will take the pics, host them on my site and post a new thread with all entries from all four competing sites, for the general populace to vote on. The sum of votes from all four sites will determine the victor.
Sounds like a good fair idea! :) When will the voting start? After seeing some of the other entries I have given up hope but it will be fun anyways :D
