Alright, here's the lowdown--I installed a 500 gig SATA drive on Blue and now my SATA DVD burner will read dvds, but it will not burn them. Motherboard specs are in "My System". System worked fine prior to installation of 500 gig hard drive.

Blue also has a fresh install of XP on it--original hard drive went belly up. I did not, however, install any of my 3rd party drivers that came with the board during installation, as I am not using RAID on this system.

Given the age of my system, along with some other odd things it is doing, I am suspecting my mobo is about to die on me. I hope I am wrong, anyone care to point me in a general direction of a fix? It is a pain in the ass to shuttle files via my 320 gig external to my media center for burning (or the laptop for that matter).

If you remove the 500GB drive, does the DVD burner burn then? Have you tried another SATA port? What are you using to burn DVDs? What media are you burning to?

I've tried all four ports, with both the hard drive attached and not attached. Media is TDK, which I have used in the past with no issues, and have tried three different burning programs: Nero, Media Monkey and isoburner. None of them want to play nicely.

While installing my new video card, I put the burner on SATA 1 and the 500 gig drive on SATA three (original config was hd on SATA 1 and dvd on SATA 2). Have not tried it yet to see if that remedies the situation.

I'm wondering...could this be a 3.0/1.5 conflict? Too bad I'm not near my computer at the moment, I'd tear it apart and take a look and see what is set at what.

I've come to the conclusion that my board is slowly dying. I've throttled the hard drive back, ran without the hard drive attached, ran with every possible configuration of plugging the SATA cables in, tried different SATA cables, and even reinstalled XP. Still ain't working.

So for now, I'm gonna dig my PATA burner out of storage and plan on a new build in the very very near future. Time for an upgrade anyways (3 years).

PATA drive doesn't work either. And to make matters more interesting, my other XP based machine is starting to do the same ****ing thing. I'm wondering if the latest security patches didn't bugger things up.

That being said, this system won't burn while running xubuntu 9.04 either. But then again, I am running off the live CD. Dual optical drives ftw!

Problem solved. A few software/driver conflicts.
