I've seen the second one before, but DAMN.. that poor guy in the first one.. he was in some trouble I'll bet!

Hahaha that sucks man.
On a more serious note, I think the installers of those racks would be in serious trouble. They are made to withstand a hit from a lift, it's not like he was speeding.
Sorry, I work in a warehouse with those kind of ranks... :/

I saw that before. Scared the **** out me because I drive a forklift at Menards, and I can get close to the racks when I stock plywood.

That would of scared the hell out of me! I can't even imagine how freaking loud that had to of been.
I wouldn't blame the guy though. Racks like that don't just avalanche like that, thats some really poor construction it looks like. They probably weren't bolted into the floor and so when he hit one, it budged or bent the leg and caused a chain reaction.

Be careful back there. We just had a Menard's open up here and already had a fatality. OSHA is currently looking into it but it seems that the bands used to bundle garden boarder wood together weren't very strong. I worry everytime I got into the lumber yard now.

a guy at a place i worked at knocked a rack and made one shelf fall, it landed on the shelf below, but that shelf withstood the impact fine.
ther designed to take an impact and withstand it.
Also saw this at work a while back, we all said we would have stayed in the truck as it would have been the safest place to be

You can see how it happened.
He bumped one of the legs, the rack there collapsed, then the rest did afterwords.
****ty luck, that.

Wow. That was amazing! You should be like a police detective or something!

even still they are designed to take an impact with a forklift truck with a load, the legs should be secured, thus it should have just wobbled, at most bent it, the entire thing shouldn't have fell like that, the only reasons i can think of is shoddy build and/or the racks were loaded incorrectly or had too much weight on them.

yeah. I was just saying that if you watch the .gif closely enough, you can see where he hits, how that collapses, then how it stresses the other sections and they fail.

yea but still, it should be able to stay up. unless like was stated, it was improperly assembled or overloaded, both of which are entirely possible. if it was properly assembled and correctly loaded he could have knocked the leg out and at most it would have sagged. I've worked in warehouses and seen it, and then someone comes in and replaces the bent/broken leg. all is good

I would have just went to the office, clocked out, and told everybody it was nice knowing them.

Under normal circumstances, yes, that would be the safest place to be, but only if proper safeguards are in place. Notice that there's no wire cage on the this forklift. Also notice that the cab of the forklift gets buried pretty quickly.
I also agree with other statements that this set of racks was either poorly installed or poorly designed. Chances are, the company was looking to cut costs EVERYWHERE, as seems to be M.O. these days, and to hell with safety.

Might not have been bolted down.

DT, this post is especially funny underneath your user title.
The answer is "no, destroyed inventory isn't good for the company". More to the point, "million-plus-dollar lawsuits are really bad for the shelving company".
