Note: Some may be barebone which need a HDD, RAM and CPU.

After looking a little deeper I found them to be around 500 dollars for a barebone with a 8600m GPU. A decent little gaming card but you're looking at at least another 250 dollars for the remaining parts which could easily get you a nice name brand laptop.

It does when you're idea of "gaming" is 3D Pin Ball and Mario Bros! :D

I've seen a lot of people saying that but I picked up my laptop for 1000 and it has 4gigs of 1066RAM, a 9800GTs and a 17" screen.
Bestbuy even had a sale a couple months ago for 799! Sounds like an affordable gaming laptop to me lol.

I honestly haven't even taken the battery out of the packaging since the laptop doesn't go anywhere. I would imagine terrible though. lol
Gateway p7811u if anyone is interested. 2.26GHz Centrino2 and 2 hdd slots :) 1920x1200 res but for some reason the newest models only have 1440x900. Mine actually has a sticker that says 1440x900 which is odd.
If you don't know about the p7811u, it was the god amongst gaming laptops. really cheap and awesomely powerful. (My wife owns one of these). Unfortunately, it was too good to be true and they discontinued them (probably due to economic reasons, bleh)
Now looking for a replacement and low and behold, a semi-champion has just emerged with the 7805. The difference, max resolution is at 1440x900 instead of the 1920x1200 of the 7811. CNet said they didn't know how they were selling those 7811 laptops and they figure they were right when they got canned. People all over msg boards and ebay are still clambering for the 7811. (Probably for the simple fact that you can't get them anymore).
Found this in a random googled forum. Not sure how accurate it is though.
EDIT: After a little looking I've also found that some 7811's I came across said they have 200gig hdds but mine has a 320GB 7200rpm drive. I bought it a few days before it was supposed to be released from BestBuy. I'm glad I found it in a cage... I actually went there looking for another gateway with a HD3200 gpu if I remember right. Glad I picked this one up. :D

Just a reminder: if you're considering a laptop with a G84/G86-based nVidia GPU, make sure to get a warranty on it "just in case", as those chips have been known for failure (http://www.google.com/search?&q=g84+OR+g86+failure). Fortunately, despite Charlie's (of the Inquirer) foaming and gnashing of teeth, this doesn't seem to have spread to other product lines, and may in fact be cleared up by now. Better to be safe than sorry, though.
