On March 18th my grandmother had major back surgery. They fused 4 of her vertebra together with 3 rods, 4 plates and 10 screws. Somewhere between the OR, Recovery, and rehab she contracted staph infection in the wound. One Dr. says that it came from the hardware they installed in her and the other says it was on her skin when they cut her. After the surgery she was in recovery for 4 days. Then the Drs made the decision to move her to a rehab facility so she could start physical therapy to learn how to walk again. (she had a good deal of swelling around the incision and she was temp paralyzed from the waist down. )

While at the care facility the Dr on staff noted that she was still draining fluid from her incision and after 9 days of it still draining she was sent back to the hospital. They cut her back open and removed some infected tissue and inserted a drainage tube. She stayed in the hospital for several more days and the tube was removed and we were finally told that she has had staph since she went into the rehab facility. With her incision still draining and her on antibiotics via a pic line the Dr. again made the decision to send her to another care facility that was 45 miles away. Apparently they were the only facility in the area capable of giving her the antibiotics. She spent a little over a week there and now today I get a call that the Dr. over there at this "state of the art" care facility which is "renowned for its staph infection care" refuses to cut open her incision and let the rest of the fluid drain out even though they took her in under the premise that this may be needed. So they moved her back to the original hospital and I am now sitting in her room waiting on the dr to come in so I can speak to him.

Everyone in my family has been just going off what he says and being nice. Well this time I am not going to be so nice and am going to demand a specialist or a competent Dr be brought in to aid in getting rid of this infection. I spoke with my cousin who is a infectious disease Dr. at a hospital in Arizona and he said that they should have never moved her in the first place if she had staph. He said that the 2 Drs are just covering their ass by sending her to a new facility every time she starts to show improvement.

I don't want to get into the legalities of anything but I will say that there is a lawyer on retainer now.

Thanks for listening to my rant. I know we have a Dr. here and I in no way mean this post as a hate post towards Drs. I just feel that these 2 particular drs are not doing their job and keep trying to cut and run when things get hard.

I hate it when people don't get the point of their jobs and/or cut corners along the way... best of luck with your grandmother.

Ha, tell me about it. I'm going for my check-up tomorrow for the (major) operation I had 2 years ago.

Hey guys, look! I'm not dead! Whee!

I have been lucky and have only had minor stuff like a broken collar bone, kidney stones and some simi major cuts (like the time I cut the tip of my finger off on a table saw) and have never had to spend more than a few hours in the hp. I do know that if I ever need an extended stay in a hp it will be one far far far away from this one.
