Welcome to my Mod!
Old Beige to Sexy Black

Heya, welcome to my new mod. I was digging around all my old cases and found one that would work really well for a mod and so I opened up Sketchup and with my limited knowledge of the program, I came up with this:

Let me know what you think!

This is pretty much my first complete mod. I have started others but they were really only to try out different techniques. This is the first one I plan on actually completing and putting parts inside. :D

And now for the pictures!

Here is the old beige case that I have decided to rip apart.

And here is a closer look at the side panel. It is unfortunate that I have to slap some bondo on all the parts that sink in... it is gonna require a bit of work. Thankfull my window design should take out most of that.

And here is the old intake fan... ewww.
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg110/Zero_Mods/DSC03321.jpg

Bare bones...

Here is the side kind of laid out.

And here it is drawn out on some painters tape. I know it is hard to see, I did it in pencil :lick: (Credit to www.mnpctech.com for the fan template, thanks!)

And finally I did some cutting.

Thats it! I will keep you all updated. Thanks for taking a look.

Succinct design, good paths for air flow, and who can go wrong in a little black dress?

Are you going to cover the cutouts with plexi, mesh, or just leave them open?

My thoughts exactly

I am going to be putting some plexi behind the cutouts.

And a bit of an update, I have the large area cut out and one of the bottom strips cut out. Hopefully I will have the side panel's bondo work all squared away.

Clear plexi, frosted, any colors?

I was thinking clear, as that is what I have on hand. However, because I have such a large area cutout frosting the outer edge might look nice. What do you think?

Sweet design!

The outcropping on the front is a nice touch. Are you going to make it out of the old panel or make a new one from scratch?

I am going to be modding the original panel :)

Since I plan on putting a fan in front how should I go about making the hole for it? I am correct in thinking that a hole saw will melt the plastic? Or should I be fine if I go slow?

holesaw is probably your best bet. just use a little water when you drill, and yeah go steady and slow :)

I've never had a problem with plastic melting unless you are doing something really thick. A 1/8" sheet should stand up fine to anything, and you can always leave the cover on the plastic while you're cutting it to make sure you don't scratch or mar the visible surface.

Hey, a little update. I finished cutting out the windows on the side panel.

As you can see i have a bit of filing to do yet.

And instead of double posting... here is another update!
I know you all very excited

Well, I have made progress with filing and getting everything straight. Still a litle ways to go yet.

And a little teaser with the fan inside it... tho it isnt really screwed in lol
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg110/Zero_Mods/DSC03366.jpg

And as you can see the bar that separated the two areas at the bottom became warped when I used the jigsaw ... so I decided to cut it out. However, I would like to make a bar that I can put between them, does anyone have an idea as to what material would be viable?

Also, would U-Channel molding look really bad if I put it on the sides? I plan on doing it to all the fan holes, but I wasn't sure about the rectangle. What do you think?

Thanks :)

Hey, nice! This is coming along quite well so far. Looking forward to next week's update.

My old case was the same chassis with a different front panel... I never really did much with it because I couldn't get over the horrible side-panel design, but you seem to have solved it by cutting that crap away! I can approve of that. +rep
