I was over at my grandmothers trimming 2 oak trees in her front yard when her dog ran out of the house when she opened the door. She ran into the road and was smelling something in the middle. While I was walking to her and calling her name a silver Mitsubishi Galant came flying down the road. He hit the dog and saw me and kept on going. He had to be doing over 55mph because there is a small curve about a block down from my grandmothers and I could hear the tires squealing as he went around it.

The dog was killed instantly and my grandmother who just got out of the hospital lost her best friend. Seriously why do people insist on speeding when they see 25mph signs, 4 child playing signs, 2 horse crossing signs and a caution light 2 blocks before her house. We called the cops and they estimated that the guy was doing around 70mph because he left skid marks around the curve. There is nothing they can do about him hitting the dog but they are going to patrol the area for the next few weeks and try and stop the speeding.

My grandmother and her neighbors are going to try and get speed bumps installed and I am going to try and find her another Chihuahua and install one of those invisible fences in her yard.

That sucks big time. What you need: On demand spike strips. :devcool::twisted:

like the ones at a parking garage? hmmm.... time to find some powerful servos and mod some spikes.

Make it so if you are going anywhere more than 10 miles over the speed limit, the spikes will pop up ahead of the car.

....

Thats a great idea. I should patent that. lol

sorry for your and your grandma's loss. hitting the dog is one thing, but to keep going... man up to your stupidness. maybe take a trip through the neighbourhood to look for the car?

The cops rode the 13 roads around here and didn't see a single silver car period.

They probably high tailed it out of there.

oh no!! that really sucks. People are cold heartless bastards I've decided. I'm sorry dude.

If you do get one of those invisible fence things, you should let us know how it works. I would def. be interested in hearing how they work! :)

Wow... if that happened to one of my pets, I'd probably go out of my way to track the guy down. So stupid for the guy to not stop...

Sorry to hear that :(

Thanks for all the kind words guys. She has had the dog for 6 years now. She got her when my grandfather passed away to kinda fill the void so to speak.

I have been reading online about the invisible fences and they all get great reviews (except for the cheap ones). Petsmart sells one that stopped a guys full grown rotty in its tracks. Its not that expensive either. When I find her a new dog I will probably buy that one. I will let everyone know how it works. Maybe I should test it on myself.

take it from experience... doggy shock collars hurt... alot...

I know the shock collars hurt like hell. Back in college I passed out at a party and someone thought it would be funny to strap one around my leg and secured the buckle thing with 2 zip ties. When I woke up someone would get close to me and clap their hands and I would get shocked. I got zapped at full strength 15 or so times before I was able to get my knife out of my pocket and cut the strap. There used to be a youtube video of it but it is not on there anymore.

I am sorry to hear about your loss. A similar thing happened to me and my fiance a couple years ago. Her families dog figured out how to take the carabiner off and went running into the road. The brother's fiance was trying to talk him to stop and tried to stop traffic. It's only a 30 mile an hour road but people do well over 50 and don't care. An old woman came flying around the corner and that was the most horrible day we have seen in a long time. He was the best dog one could ever ask for; a big beautiful german shepherd.

I rode around her area 2 times today. Once this morning around 7am and about an hour ago. Still no silver mitsubishi. My guess was it was someone visiting someone or a teen joy riding.

What I don't get is why people seem to think that their driving doesn't affect anyone or anything... it's a 1000lb+ bullet. I've almost been T-boned multiple times by careless people (most not even gossiping about crap on their phones).

You have my condolences for your grandmother's dog... losing a pet is never fun.

Thanks and you are so right. Its those people who give actual car enthusiast like me a bad name. I have a car that would outrun maybe 90% of the cars on the street around here (thats a very safe guess. I think its more like 98%) but I drive responsibly, obey the traffic laws and save the gear jamin for the track.

I figure that the majority of rules are here for our own guidance and protection... I've had to actually dodge people not paying attention swerving into my lane and stuff like that... since when is driving on the highway (or even a side street) a competition, or a place to drive aggressively?

I almost got broadsided one day while driving downtown. Speed limit is 25mph, I had a blinking red light, she had a blinking yellow. Is blinking yellow a solid green? I think not. She did. She ignored the speed limit and was doing ~50mph. I look both ways, see no cars, she comes through wormhole while blabbing on cell phone and I slam the breaks. Good times, good times. Nothing like almost dying or being severely injured three or so times within a two hour period. :D

Lemme ask one quick question: Is the purpose of a car to get to your destination or not?

(I think I have some really good material for comics just from driving for almost 2 years now and I'm a month from turning 20 :D)

I ordered a pizza last Saturday after the photo shoot I posted and while in Pizza Hut getting my pizza it started raining. So I get in the truck and decide to head down the truck route to avoid the down town traffic thats flooding the streets. I get to the turn off intersection (speed limit is 35 for like 2 miles in all directions. There is a pile up of fender benders of what looks like 10 or 11 cars. I had just came through this intersection 10 min before so it happened because of the rain. So I have to turn right and go through down town because the multiple wrecks have my route blocked. So I am almost into downtown and the speed limit is 25 for like 2 miles then 20mph until you are out of town. Low and behold there is a fender bender on this street too. traffic is at a standstill. So I grab my camera and my press credential and go snap a few photos with the intent to take them by the news paper. While I am out there I hear the people involved screaming at each other and they are both blaming the rain. OMG it rained for 10 minutes and dumped maybe 1/8" water. That means that with that little bit of traction loss tens of thousands of dollars was lost due to vehicle damage city wide. If people would obey the traffic laws and properly maintain their vehicles (replacing worn tires) then this stuff wouldn't happen.

I am a firm believer that the drivers test should be much more tough in this country and teens (under 18) should be restricted to vehicles with 90hp or less and be governed to 45mph. They should be forced to carry full coverage and the cars be low jacked / data logged, equipped with breathalyzer starting devices and monitored.

The test should be longer as well. Hmm... a market in "starter" cars would be awesome. They'd be great local commuters and keep kids from getting into too much trouble. Hmm... thinking about it, everybody should have a very limited vehicle until they prove they are able to and mature enough to drive a car with a bit more power to it.

I dunno... if people had more respect for what it is they're doing along with some common sense and basic physics knowledge we'd be alright. But considering the fact that many people consider driving to be an annoying chore or just drive fast for the fun of it.

I feel that the test is ok, at least here in Idaho, but I do think that everyone should be re-tested before their license is renewed. I know a few people that have done too many drugs in too many different combinations (Firefox is telling me that combinations isn't a word. weird. lol) that has fried out their brains since they turned 15 (driving age in Idaho) and would probably fail if they had to re-take the test. and once you turn 70 I think you should have to renew your license every year. lol No disrespect to elderly people, there are quite a few 90+ year olds in my family that are in better shape than a lot of 50 year olds ive noticed. But still, how many of us have almost died because of some old person not seeing you and pulling out RIGHT in front of you? grr. (anyone seen the South Park episode where they take all the old people's licenses away? classic. lol)

All we have to do is close down all the Country Kitchen Buffet's and the senior problem will take care of it self. Just pray no one calls the AARP on us. :D :D

<-------- is the biggest Southpark fan on earth. I have every episode to date.

Hahaha, that episode was great.

I live in a city that is supposedly known for being a nice place for people to retire... I'm wondering why I don't see more old people on the road. Maybe they don't renew their licenses or drive because our DMV has three people in it and serves at least two counties.

In Victoria, Australia at least, The age of which you can get your learner's permit (Ls as it's more commonly known here) is 16. Which means you have to have a fully licenced driver with you whenever you drive. At 18 you can get your red probationary license (Ps) which you have to have for one year and then a green probationary license (if you're over 21 when you go for your Ps, you go straight to green) for 3 years.

Important Points:

Learner's Permit
-If under 21, you have to have driven 120 hours under varying circumstances before you can get your Ps
-You must have a fully licensed driver with you at all times
-Insurance is very expensive

Red Probationary Permit
-You cannot drive high powered cars (But there isn't a clear definition of what a high powered car is last I checked, which means there are red P drivers with V12s)
-You're limited to having another Passenger under 21, unlimited for passengers over 21.
-Lasts only a year
-People over 21 do not go onto Red Ps

Green Probationary Permit
-You cannot drive high powered cars
-No limit on passengers
-Lasts 3 years and then you become fully licensed

I think re-testing at a certain age should be compulsory, but I don't agree with the 18+ statement, there's nothing to say that a 16 year old is less responsible than a 25 year old. In my experience some people are just immature and stupid, regardless of their age. In the UK, people between 17-24 (the 'young driver' bracket for the UK) make up just less than a quarter of the people caught drink-driving.
