There's only two words that can describe this.
Fracking huge.
Link (http://www.sigmaphoto.com/lenses/lenses_all_details.asp?id=3349&navigator=3)
It's one of the largest lenses in existence with a pricetag of $38,000 USD. Accurate close-ups of the moon can quite literally be taken with this.

I have a 300 f/2.8
but that is not a big lens.....
this is a big lens http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/116642-USA/Canon_2527A001_Super_Telephoto_1200mm_f_5_6L.html
and it for sale for $120,000.00 http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/800622963-USE/Canon_2527A001_Super_Telephoto_1200mm_f_5_6L.html
And Canon has a 500, 600, 800 and the 1200 I linked too.
500mm are not uncommon in the professional world. Most of my sports photo friends from across the country own one. Sadly I am not one. I could only afford the 300 and a 1.4x teleconverter.
Ok so I wanted to list the others too.

at some point, I gotta wonder whether it'd just be better to go get a reflecting telescope ;) .

I just use a general-purpose Nikkor VR 18-200. It works well though. Fast AF drive.
