For the past couple weeks I've been having an urge to re-read the book 1984 by Orwell. The first time I "read" it was in high school and I mostly just skimmed over it and even skipped a few pages. I've been looking to buy 1984 and the devinci code just for something to do and because I'm not a huge reader and would like to fix that.
Well, on the way home from hiking I went the back way to my house because the guy in front of me was going extremely slow and I didn't feel like being behind him any longer. As I was coming down, about 200' up the hill from my house, was 1984 in perfect condition standing upright on its side.
Random story but I thought I'd share.
EDIT: On the inside back cover it has a property of monte vista high school. I figure since it's Sunday I'll read a bit then return it tomorrow so the kid doesn't get fined. Bummer.

What State?
1984 is a classic. Back in the day, people would never believe that our world would turn it to that. Here we are 25 years after the fact and we are there.
Another classic read was Fahrenheit 451 or Clockwork Orange.

I think I got about halfway through 1984 before I had to stop reading. It seriously was scaring me that bad, lol. I could never survive in a world like that... the complete banning of creativity just would not go over very well.

Fahrenheit 451 is one of the best books i've read, and tbh, parts if not most of it can happen, its weather we let it happen or not!

I liked Animal Farm by George Orwell. Great book.

California. (I know...)
And the book was actually written in 1949. So he foresaw 50-60 years into the future. lol

1984 scared the **** out of me. Not so much the events in the book themselves, but how I can see how things going on now are the early stepping stones for some of the events in the book.
A society in which, technically, there are no laws, and the government is allowed to do with you what they please, including abducting you for thinking negative things about the government or having sex, is ****ing scary, and not a government I wish to see exist, ever.

And this is what actually makes it that much scarier.
When the book was written it was science fiction. Parts of that book are now science fact.
When you take a bunch of the books written during the same decade ('45-'65), you will see a similar theme. The perversion of society and government away from serving the people and heading towards serving the rich (who are the government).
The real scary part for me is that knowing what I do of the US, Israel, and European governments, most of the stuff in 1984 is not that far fetched and is even in practice to this day behind the scenes.
There could be a couple of "Save the planet" types of video games based on 1984, Fahrenheit 451 and Brazil.

The really frustrating part of our government is that many people in office aren't actually politicians. They're just... there.
Hopefully something happens soon to get us back on the right track.

I find nothing more depressing than optimism.

What good fortune for governments that the people do not think.

I actually have a few things on mind (well one: revolution) but I'd rather not get involved in some messy crap. That probably is a really touchy issue as well.

A true revolution in this country would be if the voting public actually got involved and made their voices heard in all levels of government. As it is less than 10% of the population is making the decisions for the rest.

Really? No wonder our democracy isn't working very well, so many people just don't give a crap, lol. I didn't get to vote in this last election (almost put an "r" where the "l" is for some reason, lol) due to a weird moving situation. Also got my absentee ballot too late.
