Well, everyone has to die sometime. I can't imagine the last years of his life were all that pleasant, but a lot of it was his own fault so I can't say that I feel bad really. Hope he's off to a better place.

Before MJ yes. After? No.

Wacko only had one hit, and that one song was only a hit because Eddie Van Halen played the guitar solo.

You know.. its kind of crazy. IMO he was a complete freak. I respect some of his achievements. There is no doubt he had a huge influence on the music world, and was revolutionary in the dance and choreography realm. The part that just floors me, is the fact with all of his "weirdness" and then of course the "legal" issues, all the people that were so enamored by him. He had a HUGE fan base, and it was world wide. He would sell out stadiums all around the globe within hours of ticket sale openings, and these were enormous venues to boot. He was a very talented individual, and I can't say I didn't like any of his music, but I still just can't get past how damn crazy he was.

So RIP Jacko.

RIP Farrah as well, your poster changed the lives of many a young men. :D

The one good thing I will say about Jackson is that his older stuff always gets my toes-a-tapping, even though by preference I don't like that kind of music very much. Its all over the TV right now though and I can't suppress the urge to start tapping my toes. lol

And oddly enough, Thriller is the very album that Eddie Van Halen played on. He played the solo to 'Beat It'.

And at last check, the mighty juggernaut that is Van Halen has sold somewhere near 70 or so million albums.

Your numbers are off.

By about half:

Thriller sold over 100 million. yes, more than 100,000,000 albums. It's the best selling album of the entire world.

I am not trying to take anything away from Van Halen, but I have to say they are unfortunately not even in the same ball park as Michael Jackson. :(

Throughout his career he received numerous honors and awards, including the World Music Awards' Best-Selling Pop Male Artist of the Millennium, the American Music Award's Artist of the Century Award and the Bambi Pop Artist of the Millennium Award.[27][193] He was a double-inductee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, once as a member of The Jackson 5 in 1997 and later as a solo artist in 2001. Jackson was also an inductee of the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002.[27] His awards include multiple Guinness World Records (eight in 2006 alone), 13 Grammy Awards, 13 number one singles in his solo career—more than any other male artist in the Hot 100 era—and the sale of over 750 million albums worldwide, making him the world's best selling male pop artist.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Jackson

Also check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Records_and_achievements_of_Michael_Jackson

# Jackson was the first artist to have four top-ten singles from one album (Off the Wall).
# Jackson was the first artist to have seven Top 10 singles from one album (Thriller), a feat matched only by his sister Janet and Bruce Springsteen.
# Jackson was the first artist to simultaneously have the number-one album and number-one single on Billboard's Pop Charts and Black Charts.
# Jackson was the first artist in the 1980s to have two simultaneous top-five hits ("Beat It" and "Billie Jean" on April 16, 1983).
# Jackson is the only artist to have five number-one hits from one LP, Bad ("Bad", "The Way You Make Me Feel", "Man in the Mirror", "I Just Can't Stop Loving You", and "Dirty Diana").
# Jackson had nine number one singles in the 1980s, more than any other artist during the decade.
# Jackson's album Bad remained in the top five of the Billboard 200 for thirty-eight weeks, longer than any other album to date.

Like I said earlier I am no rabid Michael Jackson fan, I think he was weird as hell, BUT I have to say give the man the credit he is due.

Fair enough. I still stand by my belief that if Eddie Van Halen had not helped out Quincy Jones and Steve Lukather with recording the guitars for the album 'Thiller', Michael Jackson would NOT had been nearly as huge as he was. When 'Beat It' was released as a single, AOR (Adult Oriented Rock) stations were deluged with requests for it.

Bear in mind, this is the early 1980s we are talking about. Music was segregated much like humans were in previous decades. AOR at the time was exclusively white dominated (with the notable exceptions of Jimi Hendrix and Thin Lizzy). Hell, even MTV rarely showed videos by black artists...until the release of 'Beat It'. That one song changed EVERYTHING.

And the real kicker? Eddie recorded his part for free--he called Quincy Jones a ****in' asshole on the phone (Ed didn't realize who kept calling him) and felt that recording his part free of charge was the least he could do to mend fences, so to speak.

Thriller was the #1 album of the year 1984. Guess which band had the #2 album for a good portion of the year?

Addendum: I've been thinking, and I have to agree with Airbozo--self proclamation means nothing.

Jackson is the fourth best selling artist of all time with over 750 million records sold. (First, second and third are as follows: 1. The Beatles, 2. Elvis Presley, 3. Bing Crosby)

Elvis is the true King. And since Wacko married Lisa, that would truly make him the Prince of Pop.

Zephik

Why does it even matter which band or group was better than the other? I could understand if it was like two bands of the same genre, but Van Halen and Jackson are like two totally different types aren't they? Kind of a weird argument since they have two totally different fan bases. Now if they were both pop or rock or metal or whatever, then they would have pretty much the same fan base and thus whichever sold more records would be the better technically the better band, but because they have two different fan bases the argument of which musician is better is kind of pointless. For further example, if 70 percent of the world liked jazz and the other 30 percent liked the blues, that only means that most people like jazz and not that a jazz band is better than a blues bland. If that make sense.

Anyways. Talk about a topic derailment! We went from the death of Jackson to this. lol

I am not really sad he is dead, but I do respect the man for making millions and millions and millions of dollars. lol. and yes, he does have some catchy songs, put his greatest hits and see who starts dancing around you! lol.

I'm not sure it was self proclaimed but even if it was ... it stuck.

Google: King of Pop (http://www.google.com/search?source=ig&hl=en&rlz=&=&q=King+of+Pop&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&oq=)

But as Zephik said .. when it comes to Van Halen and Michael Jackson its not really an Apples to Apples comparison. Van Halen has been considered a Rock/Heavy Metal Band and Michael Jackson has always been in the Pop/Soft Rock category. Also its a band vs a single artist.

Elvis will always be the King of Rock and Roll, but MJ definitely wasn't a one hit wonder, no talent hack, and with his awards and influence on the industry, I figure he deserves to be the King of Pop. It still doesn't change the fact we was a nut job!

Farrah fawcett died yesterday , quite sadly but peacefully of cancer,
she had the support of family and friends
When she got to the pearly gates St Peter welcomed her and congratulated her on her life and the work she had done.
He asked if there was one wish she could be granted what would it be.
She replied she would have liked to keep all the children safe.
Michael Jackson died a short time later..........................................

Stop and think about it for a second...Pop is simply short for popular. Elvis was the original crossover artist--rock, rockabilly and country. Hell, had he put out a jazz album it probably would have went to #1.

To me, Elvis is simply the King. Everyone else is a poor imitation.

La Toya Jackson made the statement:

I cannot and will not be a silent collaborator in his crimes against young children... Forget about the superstar, forget about the icon. If he was any other 35-year-old man who was sleeping with little boys, you wouldn't like this guy.

Jackson paid $22 million to the family of Jordan Chandler after he was accused of molesting that child in 1993 (no trial). In this case, the child was able to fairly accurately describe Jackson's penis. The description was verified by a strip search of Jackson on December 20, 1993 that lasted 25 minutes. The court order stated that investigators were to examine, photograph, and videotape Jackson's entire body, specifically including his penis. (1)

Jackson paid $2million to the family of Jason Francia in 1996 after he was accused of touching the child multiple times (no trial).

The sad thing is that MJ's kids are now likely to be raised by the father that raised him and warped his mind.

I couldn't agree with you more. Unfortunately most Americans don't care about the issues that are important. Nevermind that our soldiers are oversees. Nevermind that millions are in poverty, children die by the thousands everyday, and that we could very possibly be on the brink of nuclear war. Americans want to hear about what crazy thing is Britney Spears doing now and who is the next celebrity death gonna be and "Octo-Mom" bought something at the store that wasn't for the kids! I'm not bashing on anyone in particular, please don't hate me, but turn on the tv and you'll know it's true. More people voted for American Idol than voted in three presidential elections combined. I rest my case. :dead:

Unfortunately most Americans don't care about the issues that are important. Nevermind that our soldiers are oversees. Nevermind that millions are in poverty, children die by the thousands everyday, and that we could very possibly be on the brink of nuclear war.

I understand where you are going with that, but do most people want to sit and talk about a war/issue that has been going on for nearly a decade and have beaten that horse quite harshly for what, almost seven/eight years?

I'm tired of talking about it ever since I was a freshman in high school. I'm tired of waiting every day of my freaking life for my little cousin, who had been the closest thing to a brother to me for so many years, to start his tour over there, EVEN though we have supposed to have been pulling them out for years. If Iraq was a woman, then she'd have been pregnant a LONG time ago.

I donate to help those in poverty, I donate to help the sick children, I donate to help the hungry. I donate for AIDS, I walk for cancers, but sitting and talking about it isn't going to help them. Overpopulation, people having too much sex, and ignorance brought about quite a few of those issues, and other than donating and supporting causes there isn't much I can do to help any of that. Talking about it isn't going to help a thing.

So if people feel like taking a few minutes out of their day to talk about something less important, let them. I see no issue in that.

Anywho: I like Michael Jackson's music. Always have. Then again I like just about every music. It is sad that money can buy away a trial for something that should have been deemed criminal, therefore a trial led by the state. But this was generally before the big push for childrens' rights, and anti-abuse / anti-sexual abuse really took off. Either way, he is dead. This means no more music to enjoy, and if he did do something, he can't ever do it again.

This really strikes at the heart of what is wrong with our structured societies.

Elvis was the "King" of Rock and M****** J****** the "King" of Pop .....

Truth is without their fans they would have been nothing. We are all of us of equal value and rights on this earth. The stratification of society is the sickness we suffer. It's behind the credit crunch, the fact the Whacko could pay his way out of public humiliation once or twice - or if you take the other view that he was screwed out of cash by heartless manipulators and a lot of other issues.

And now loads of dumb fans are going to help the Jackson family make more money out of their abused and now dead son than when he was alive - by visiting NeverLand and buying mock gold and chocolate (white presumably) statues of the whacko when they walk out.

As Leonard Cohen wrote:

Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows that the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Only because the poor keep falling for it! Hundreds of thousands of poor people are going to make the already wealthy Jackson mob even wealthier now by handing their hard earned cash to get close to their personal dreams about a fictional character created by the media after being moulded into shape at the hands of a violent father ...

.... and so we go on painting perfect circles of pointless nonsense in the sand .... the world won't change until the little people realise that the big people are not big at all but just wear high heels, fancy masks and tall hats...

His two biggest hits, "Billy Jean" and "Black and White" were number one for 7 weeks. And, his three biggest albums, "Thriller," "Bad," and "Dangerous" each produced 7 top 40 hits. WTH? Source; TMZ

I'm absolutely sickened by the way his "family" is exploiting his death for their own gain. I caught a few highlights on the news from his funeral service, and I was just.. disgusted.

Having a rock concert with a casket on display? Sick. Having a little girl who lost her father being forced to speak, while her grandmother holds the microphone in front of her face. SICK.

The worst of all is how the whole family is trying to cash in on his death now by giving all these interviews and stuff; you know it's only a matter of time until the books/movies/tv deals all start to come out.

What is wrong with the world? We made a spectacle of the mans death. If you believe he was innocent, show some respect and let him go with dignity. If you believe he was a child molester, then just be happy he's gone and let it be done.

Just get over it, either way.
