Sorry guys, I posted in the OS section but I'm doing my backup now and need and answer soon.

Is windows 7 stable enough to use as the sole OS? Any word if big brother "bugged" it to track people's use for "testing purposes"? I'm not sure if I trust a free OS from M$ unless there's a hidden motive haha.

I've actually switched back to XP after a month or so of using Windows 7. I love 7, but its a bit buggy, which is kind of to be expected since its an RC. Just random momentary freezes and stuff like that.

Not really sure what you are asking though. Its a full OS, no limitations or anything like that, the only downside is that you have to pay for it next year when the RC expires, if you don't, they'll shut down your computer every two hours.

Once it hits, it's going on all my computers. Even my Netbook

This is mainly what I was looking for. I was thinking about only reformatting with windows 7 but I don't want to hassle with bugs. I think I'll just stick with Vista as my main OS and maybe dual boot with 7.

7 is stable as is now, and is less of a resource hog than Vista. 7 is perfectly fine as your sole OS, and one of our devs has been running the very first MSDN beta release since it was first released with absolutely 0 problems. The RC is better than beta of course, and the final build will be very similar to the RC, just slightly improved.

If you are really wary, just wait til October and go to the release version of 7 and ditch Vista for good.

I'd stick with Vista too. I will say however that 7 is much snappier than XP and/or Vista. But the bugs got to me. Pretty annoying, for example, when you open your start menu and it bogs down the comp just to load the list of programs and their icons.

I can't wait until the official release, I'll definitely be switching then. But for right now, its not really a huge hassle or anything, but if little things that don't really make sense get under your skin easy, stick with a final release OS's.

(other experiences may differ for many different reasons, obviously.)

/\ This. Personally I haven't had any problems at all with it, though I've only been running it full-time for about a week now. I had a little graphical weirdness before I got the nVidia drivers installed, but since then I haven't had any problems. The new taskbar takes a bit of getting used to, but I find I really like it; it's the first time putting my taskbar on the side actually works well :D

been running 7 since the RC was release and changed over all my computers to it. Haven't had any bugs come up yet, knocks on wood. It even runs on my laptop and the file server both only have 1/2 the suggested RAM to run (says 1 gig for 32-bit install both are running only 512MB) I like it a lot better then XP so I'm putting $ aside now for my primary comp and the laptop and file server will probably go back to XP when the RC expires next year.

I was running it for a while on a couple of different systems. I have had no issues and will reload it soon.

One funny feature, is that if you have a bunch of windows open, click and hold the top bar of one window and shake it back and forth, all other windows will minimize to the task bar.

I am upgrading most of my systems once it releases.

When downloading missed drivers, should I go for Vista64? I don't believe it picked up my GPU.

EDIT: Firefox icon isn't showing up.

EDIT: And wtf is the admin password?!

The admin password is whatever you set it to be, as with any windows install. If you don't remember setting one, then there probably isn't one. If the Firefox icon isn't showing up, then you probably did something wrong, try reinstalling it or checking Program Files.

If you are in need of drivers go for the Vista ones. If you installed a 64 bi Windows 7 then get the 64, if you installed 32 get 32.

Are you referring to a permanent firefox icon in the taskbar (ala 'quick-launch')? Because when I installed it I had to add it manually. Just start up FF, right-click on the icon in the taskbar, and select 'Pin this program to the taskbar'.

As for programs, 7 is built on the same kernel as Vista, so yeah, if 7 drivers aren't available just get the appropriate Vista drivers.

Already went back to Vista. I didn't set an admin password but it wanted one. I checked my account password and it wouldn't accept it.

I tried defaults such as: password, pass, 1234, 12345, admin, default, and administrator.

As for installing firefox, I definitely didn't do anything wrong. I even tried searching for the icons and in its directory they were even dead icons. I didn't have these issues in w7beta when I dual booted with vista.

Anyway, it lasted a whole 20 minutes on my machine. I'll deal with it later. I have a lot of homework to do and they're online classes so I didn't have a ton of time to dick around with annoying bugs/distractions.

WoW does that on mine. the icons are in the directory but 7 refuses to use them. I also like that if you have the 3rd mouse button, i.e. scroll wheel button, then you get a stacked view of all the open windows and can rotate through which one you want on top.
