So my 1.5 year old $5000 camera Canon 1D mkIII wont power on. Tried both my spare batteries and still nothing. Spend the last 30 min on the phone with Canon Professional Services (canon's express tech service for real professional photographers) trouble shooting and the only 2 things the tech guy could come up with "bad power switch" or "bad PCB" so It will be on the way to them tomorrow. Looks like it going to cost just over $1000 if its the board or under $500 if its the switch. These were just estimates because he could not quote me a price without opening it up and figuring it out. But hey I get a free cleaning and calibration.... :facepalm: I can not complain because it would be more if I were not a CPS member. This mkIII went bad with just over 43k shutter actuation's (number of photos taken).

Thank god I have my 30D as a backup. I have 2 photo shoots tomorrow and 1 Thursday, and a small wedding on Saturday.

I had a chance to get a 5D at cost last Christmas in exchange for some work I did, but ended up taking the cash instead since I needed to buy presents for others instead of myself. :D

I regret not taking it now!

Good luck with the repairs!

I got lucky with a few warranties this time. In one week I had the following die;
My car required major engine work (not under warranty, but I have gotten my money out of it with 180k miles). The washer died and it has 6 months left on the warranty. Took them almost 2 months to come out to diagnose the problem. Should be fixed next week. My TV died and it is only 2 years old. Took them 2 months and 3 visits to kind of fix it. Now the second HDMI port does not work... The fridge we were using for Cider kegs and extra storage died. That was our original Fridge, almost 20 years old. The water heater died. This one was not an issue since I had already re-plumbed my house and installed an on demand water heater (in another thread).

To some an extended warranty is a waste of money. In the case of my TV and Washer it was a wise investment.

Good luck with the camera!

That sucks about your camera and bozo's tv and washer and such. I find it funny how it always happens to those who take care of their things. I know people who beat the crap out of things and never have anything break, yet I baby everything and always have crap breaking left and right. Just how it goes I suppose.

Don't you love warranties. I got screwed with the one on my laptop. My mother paid extra for an extended warranty through Circuit City (where we bought it). The only issue I've had with the machine was a fail HD which happened under the free included 1 year Gateway warrenty. And shortly after the Gateway warranty ended circuit city folded and I lost the extended warrenty we paid extra for.

Are you sure you lost the warranty? Normally the way it works is that CC just sells another companies service. I have had this happen in the past and was able to get service directly from the service company. Took me some time to track down who actually held the contract though. I had to contact my state's consumer protection unit.

Circuit City's warranties are still valid, they're contracted through third parties.

Used to work for them, now it's Office Depot. Also third-party.
