My girlfriends friend's boyfriend has an old computer he wants to get rid of... he asked his girlfriend if I would want it... she said "of course he would... he'd be like a kid on Christmas morning."

She IMs me on AIM asking if I wanted her bf's old computer... I said sure. Everything works but it has viruses and is old. Then she told me it's a Sony All-In-One!

I got super excited because I've never worked on one before and I think it'd be fun to mod.

I honestly didn't know they had older all-in-ones but after a little google I found these:

I don't know much else about it besides it's sony, it's old and it's an all-in-one with xp.

Updates coming as soon as he gets it to me.

I have one with 98 on it. Mine is an original Gateway Profile.

Hmm, sounds interesting. There are a lot of interesting possibilities with a system like that...

From what it seems they are just laptops with flipped screens so upgrading may be limited which may be a bummer. I was reading about some of these models and some only accept 1-2 gigs of ram o.O

Laptop parts?

That's what the Gateway Profile had.

I scored a free fully working Dell Optiplex GX150 thin client fully working last week. Just loaded Linux Mint and it works fine.

'Twill be the new media center.

Post pics when you get it. All-in-ones are always interesting.

I got a free computer today! Celeron, 256MB, 80GB HD, XP. Just a dead PSU. I'll put a new $20 one in and aanother 256MB and sell it for $150 :)

TGS: Always a good way to make some spare cash. :D

I was told he'd get it to me by Wednesday but no word yet.

Very nice TGS. I used to do similar with laptops but that business died now that new laptops are getting so cheap.

Nice pick-up! My GF has one of those that she mainly uses as a TV. Sucks a PC, but hey, so many possibilities with it! ;)

Nearly free computers are great too. I've gotten all of my servers and a few desktops from the local recycle center with a small donation. It's also a good place to pick up printers, battery backups and even old heater cores / other coils.

I usually fix/rebuild old systems and free hardware and give them to friends or family member that need them. I've also found free parts at recycle centers, like last week I was dumping stuff off at the town transfer station (drop off point for the dump) and they have a small pile of electronics, scored a recent AGP GPU and a DVD drive from a Dell, which are both nice upgrades for my workshop rig.

Yeah, My brother was dropping off the family recycling and got a whole working computer.
The guy said he thought it was getting slower because of the dust. Some people shouldn't own computers.
My brother scored the whole thing-minus the harddrive- and resold it for $100
