Post the picture of your guys/gals tattoos! (please keep it clean) Maybe I will get a idea of what I want for my 18th birthday!
Another possibility is design me a armband tattoo or a single object that would go on my upper arm around the shoulder. I like tribal and dragons and shields and all that good stuff!
there are about 4 of these threads started...one of them by me lol

Well this one is a little different! I want people to try to design a cool tattoo that I could possibly put on my arm! =)

Blech. Forget that armband stuff, man. Get a real tattoo.
How to get a tattoo without wearing a giant flashing sign above your head that says "I did it because its the cool thing to do!":
Stay away from Tribal. Stay away from Armbands. Stay away from non-one-of-a-kind pieces or pieces that everyone and their sister's long lost cousin's twice removed dog gets. Stay away from quirky little sayings like "Live, Laugh and Love". Pretty much, just stay away from anything that isn't original.
Now, the tattoo artist is probably the most important part of getting a tattoo. If you want the best, or at least not crap, then stay away from Tattoo Professionals imo. Go find a Tattoo Artist. There is a world of difference between the two and anyone who knows anything will be able to tell the difference right away. Don't be afraid to set your date back because you have to travel a bit to get to the good artists, its worth it in the end.
Everything below this line you can ignore because I'm just a very nit picky person, but if you agree with what I've said so far then feel free to read on. Its just my opinion so take it with a grain or two of salt.
----------------------------------------------------------
Don't jam pack a bunch of detail into a small area. Better yet, don't get a small tattoo. Your body is a giant canvas, USE IT. You wouldn't buy a 10"x10" canvas and only paint 5"x5" of it, it just looks silly. Don't be afraid to use a large amount of space, like your entire shoulder/arm for example. It will look better in the end and you'll love it even more. Here (http://fc06.deviantart.com/fs19/f/2007/249/4/9/dragon_tattoo_by_Pallat.jpg)is an example of what I mean. A tattoo done right looks better than a tattoo not done right. So just be open about it. You want a piece of art, not a little spur of the moment. Make the tattoo look incorporated into your body, like its a part of your body. There are tattoos that look like they were plastered on and then there are those with shading and other techniques that make it look apart of you. This (http://bored-space.com/Pics/PhoenixTattoo/Phoenix-Bird-Tattoo003.jpg) is a tattoo that is plastered on. It looks like a lick and stick. This (http://www.bmeink.com/miniport/A70924/high/bmepb614619.jpg) is one thats not, see the shading? How its very three dimensional and has depth? Not that theres anything really wrong with lick and stick tattoos, I guess I just prefer it to look like its apart of me. Just looks better imo. This (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_tLsyi8nme4I/SPNs8wN6qkI/AAAAAAAAAMo/3d9X8p3AQRM/s400/chinese+dragon+tattoo.jpg) is a pretty cool "lick and stick" tattoo for example.
Anyways, just get whatever you want. That's the most important thing. I know plenty of people who just go in randomly, open a book, say I want that and get it. I don't agree with it, but some people are just like that, and thats fine really. Just make sure its something that you really want, something that you can look into the mirror every day and smile about. You want to love it, not like it.

Don't get a tattoo just because you can. you'll probably regret it in a few years. wait for something that jumps out at you.

I have an idea for a tattoo slowly forming in my head... I just need to try doing multiple renditions of it on paper and put another few years' thought into it. Basically I want to somehow involve roots growing out of my spine and have other things tangled into the roots as well as the ends of the roots forming trees or something... it needs a lot more thought.

@killergamer - Listen to the others. Don't get a tattoo because you can, get one because you've found a design that you like and it means something to you, or because you really love it. Better yet, get the artist to draw something for you. Go in for your consultation and really talk about what you want, otherwise you'll end up with some ink on your arm that you really don't like. I am never, ever going to get a tattoo from a book. Anything I get will be from my head and the artists.
@Zephik - Too bloody right. If you're going to do something, make it worth it. Don't get these little armbands that are more of a fashion thing. There not worth the time or money.
@xRyokenx - That sounds pretty cool. It also sounds like a lot of sittings, but hey, it'll be worth it. Your idea sounds a little like what Jeff Hardy has - http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2363/1849575908_5882a94094.jpg - the roots extend up his neck and down his back.
