If you have ever tweaked your Firefox about:config pages you might - as I have in the past - ended up in a situation where you have degraded performance .. rather than improving it.
Found a nice little trick for restoring the configurations to normal.
Either go to Run --> firefox -safe-mode
or if that doesn't work navigate in explorer to the program directory -> right click on firefox.exe -> "safe run"
or Click Start -> All Programs -> Firefox -> Firefox (safemode)
a box like this appears:

Tick "Reset all user preferences to Firefox defaults" then click "Make Changes and Restart".
You will lose certain other personalised features but if you made a mess of your config files all will be restored to normal without needing to uninstall and reinstall anything.
