Note: I will move this after I get a few replies. I just need some quick replies.

Ok so I am working on several photos in photoshop. Adding some grunge borders and the like. I have about 30 photos open @ about 6mb each and 50 eps files open @ about 2mb each.

I will get about 10 min into the first photos and photoshop will crash to the desktop. No "windows has encountered a problem" nothing. Photoshop just crashes to the desk top. I did get a "there is not enough memory to perform that task" error on the 3rd try just before it crashed. I know I am not running out of memory because I have 4gb in my photo editing rig.

Specs:

Athlon 64 x2 5000+
4gb Corsair XMS2 800
gforce 7600gt
Win Vista Home premium 32 bit
photoshop cs3

Memory still good? That can do it too...

Any OC? Sounds more like heat or an instability, not a RAM overflow.

Just noticed 32 bit. It can only allocate 2 GB to any app, and it only sees 3.5 GB. You may have something start up elsewhere, and terminate PS for a memory allocation request.

Ram test out OK. The photo rig is stock, no OC, and the temps are normal. Not high at all.

I do remember getting the "not enough memory error" a while back while working on a very large .tiff file. It was something like 80mb. But I have 2.5gb of ram allocated for photoshop to use and another 50gb of allocated scratch disk space for it to use. So there is no way its running out of memory to use.

Not sure then, unless it's malware.

I guess I will leave malware bytes running and see if it catches anything.

I'd recommend a heavy caliber like a .45-70 Govt. :P

I'd also mention the 3.5 gig memory cap, but I highly doubt that's coming into play. My vote is for malware as well.

Just use an AT4. and film it. :D

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.45-70

It has been called the .45-70 Govt long before any current issues of this day and age.

Perhaps I should have suggested a .44 magnum instead lol.

Edit: Sorry about the thread hijack, but given the title of the thread... :P

Defrag the disks?

On that same thought, I'd check the disks for errors/surface scan. It's "possible" that there is a bad sector in there, and that once you use a certain amount of the disk, it hits that bad sector, causing the error. I've seen a bad sector that was in the system pagefile once, and when you hit a certain size, the system would crash.

After resizing the pagefile, the system wouldnt boot at all, because now the bad sector was right at the begining of the file. Disabling virtual memory completely, running a surface scan to make the bad sector, and then rebooting/re-enabling sorted it out, but any bad sectors should be a warning to replace the disk ASAP, or at least have solid backups.

I will run a disk check tonight. I think the problem was with a .eps file I had. I think something in it was corrupt I saved over it in illustrator and the problem is gone.

I forgot to move this thread so I am moving it to the right forum.

You may need to adjust your virtual memory. (http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/89ca317f-649d-40a6-8934-e5707ee5c4b81033.mspx)
Or install additional DDR2 RAM modules.
. .Nevermind looks like that has been covered.

A fresh install of the software may do the trick.

A memory or disk fault is a good place to start investigating. Also ...

With that many images open Photochop will have a big pagefile .. ideally this is best on a separate (physical not logical) disk than that which the software and O/S are running on.

If you have the pagefile on the O/S & programs drive you might see this issue.
