I remember reading a while back on some members here being experienced in repairing LCD backlights.

Anyone care to help me out? Is it basically just opening the LCD and replacing the bulb? One of those things that sounds complicated until you open it up?

Just the opposite.. sounds easy until you open it up.

The ccfl back light in an LCD uses an external power transformer. I'd try replacing that first, since it's literally 2 plugs after you open the case. If that doesnt fix it, then it's a more serious fix, which involves disassembling the LCD panel itself, since the lights are contained within it.

Usually what fails isn't actually the backlight, but instead the backlight power inverter (what the ccfl's plug into). Which makes sense when you think about what it does... so anyways, yeah, like Luke said; try replacing the inverter board. Though actually, what you might want to try it to pull the actual panel off (be very careful with it, it's thin and fragile), hook up everything except for the inverter/ccfl's, put a light source behind it, and see if the panel itself still works. That way you can make sure that the problem isn't the LCD controller board or the panel itself, both of which are significantly more expensive to replace.

Is it a Laptop LCD or a Monitor LCD? What model Laptop or Monitor is it? I have a Toshiba or TDK monitor LCD that has a bad module but the LCD is in excellent condition.
