View Full Version : Favorite knife?

Kind of a random thread, I know... but my favorite knife that I've had for years finally signed off.
http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/774/swfl1.jpg
It doesn't look like much but it was one of the best feeling knives I've ever owned. I bought it back when S&W actually had American knives instead of imported pieces of crap with soft pot metal screws and brittle blades.
(I actually have one of the china versions I picked up at Big 5 for 10 bucks on sale. Amazing knife for the price but the screws came stripped and the blade wasn't 440.)
I was looking at one of these sexy beasts when it dawned on me that maybe I should start a thread on members' favorite knives, if anyone has one of course.

My current workhorse is a gerber paraframe I (middle in pic below), I also own a paraframe II but do not like the siver look (bottom in pic below).

For years and I mean like 8 years I carried and used a Gerber Chameleon II. That knife held the best edge of any knife I ever owned. It beat out bucks, S&W, and even a Sig-Saur knife I bought once.

Nice.
I was looking at autos just for the sake of having one but apparently they're illegal in every state except Utah if they have a blade over 2". Funny because manual knives are just as fast.
It just sucks because a lot of the autos are absolutely sexy.

neither of the 2 I use are autos. They are not even assisted. They just have the thumb stub thing. I can easily flick both though after a little time polishing contact points and tweaking of the main screw.

Since I am not into combat knives. My favorite knife in the kitchen is a global knife. http://www.yoshikin.co.jp/w/index.html They are made by Yoshikin Metal Industry co. They are some of the sharpest knives I have ever used. They will last a long time if you take proper care of them.

The knives me and buzz linked to are not combat knives but rather they are very day general purpose use knives. I use mine for everything from cutting wire to cleaning my finger nails.

Sorry for the horrible picture, I couldn't find my camera so I had to use a craptastic camera phone. But this is my favorite knife, which happens to be a multitool too. Its probably the best multitool I've ever owned. The blades are very sharp and the metal is something special. I've TRIED bending some of the pieces just to test the durability and I couldn't. I use the screwdriver all the time and there is no sign of wear and tear. Nothing beats a good multitool! Just wish I remembered the brand...

I'm with Zephik, my favorite knife is this:

Leatherman Wave (http://www.leatherman.com/multi-tools/full-size-tools/wave.aspx). It's the most versatile tool I've ever owned.
Another one of my favorites:

I've used this thing to chop up small trees (~3 inch dia) for firewood before :D It's got a nice heft to it, and a crazy thick blade, for a folder.

Damascus: A specially forged, layered steel made up of a variety of steels, It offers remarkable toughness and edge quality. For finishing, the surface layers or lines are exposed through an acid etch, which creates a very unique visual effect. Used in special applications due to its inherent high cost and artistic nature.

I carry the exact same Gerber paraframe and love it. It's about time for a new one though. I love a sharp knife but I HATE sharpening them. For the price of the Gerber it's not worth the time or trouble to sharpen it. They're pretty sharp out of the package.
I used to carry one of these:

Great knife, a little heavy and the blade was short but it was always razor sharp. I've recently discovered serrated utility blades, so I'll probably be getting another one.
For kitchen knives, I love Cutco products, but I can't afford them.

@Eclecticos: Do you actually have a 180DM? How does the edge actually hold up compared to a normal steel blade? I'm familiar with the technique used to make Damascus Steel blades, but I've never actually had the privilege of handling one in person. ..or is this just another another random advert? :(

Sorry for the small pic, but I would love to have this set--the Cutco Ultimate Set:

That cutco knife set is nice. I would love for that to be in my kitchen.
I used to have a boot knife with a Damascus blade. I bought it from smoky mountain knife works. It held a nice edge if you finished the edge with a dry leather strap after a few passes on the hone. I used to use it as a dressing knife when I used to deer hunt every weekend of the winter. I think I left it at the hunting club and it grew legs and walked off.
The best knife I have ever held was a ceramic blade folder that mu uncle has. It cost something like $800 and has a lifetime warranty on any type of damage. It is razor sharp and will literly slice a piece of paper in half. I know this because that is his favorite trick to demo it for people. He uses it for dressing game, and trimming the meat he buys. He has had it for 8 years and it is still as sharp as the day he bought it and he has never had to sharpen it or send it back to be sharpened.

I've got a Cutco hunting knife. Lemme tell you, that thing is bad assed. I've field dressed 4 deer (including breaking the pelvic bone with it) and it just now starting to dull a tad bit. I'll be sending my Cutco off to get resharpened--that's the only downfall of the Cutco set; gotta ship them across country to get sharpened. Some reps have the tools and the ability to sharpen onsite, but back when I was selling Cutco, those people were few and far between.

Your uncle has one of those too?? lol why does like every uncle have a sweet knife? Mine likes to show off by shaving effortlessly with it when we go camping. He demoed how sharp it was one time by cutting my (cheap) leather wallet in half. :( (I picked up a new wallet at one of the hunting stores nearby so I didn't care that much lol)
He also has the sweetest steak knife set I've ever seen. He got them from a guy who was once a millionaire but went bankrupt and had to sell pretty much everything. They cut through even the toughest steak like butter. Sooooo nice.

Think I'm gonna try and make my own knife. I've done it before, it'll be a nice change from the high-tech. Anyone wanna join me/interested in the results?

Although definitely not my style, my first knife was a buck of the same basic style when I was a young kid and they are heirloom quality.
EDIT: I picked up a Jeep "rescue knife" at Big 5 today for 11.99. It's a neat looking knife (sorta) but it's a cheapy. I knew it wasn't quality but picked it up just to have. I'm pretty shocked the MSRP was $49.99!
Almost identical to this one except skeletonized.

My first knife was a buck just like crimson posted. I still have it along with my grandfathers buck he carried for 25+ years. Both still hold edges for weeks with the proper honing.
Kayin I made a knife back in high school using a piece of 3/8" bar stock, an oxy/acetylene torch, hammer and anvil. I wasted a bottle of oxygen on that knife. It took me a week on and off to get the shape and another month with files and a hone to put an edge on it. Then I got the bright idea to anneal it like I saw a guy do on tv. So I filled a bucket up with water, got the knife as hot as I could with out punching a hole through it and dumped it in the bucket. It made it hard alright. So hard I could not put an edge back on it with a hone. It took a belt sander to do it and that left a crappy edge. I scrapped it and never revisited it. I do have an old cross cut 2 person tree saw dating back to my grandfathers grandfather that I always wanted to make a knife out of. It would make plenty of blade blanks but I cant bring myself to cut it up. Please do post a worklog and I will even post something about it on http://themakersworkbench.com
My first was an old, old Wenger 'swiss-army' knife that my dad gave me for I think my 10th birthday. Yes, it's from back when Wenger actually distributed stuff under their own name in the US :D I have no clue how old the thing is (it's got no date on it anywhere) but it looks the same today as it did when I got it...after 11 years of riding in my pocket.
Oneslowz, please oh please don't cut up that saw. That's an awesome piece of history right there. Plus, I'm sure there are plenty of collectors that would pay out the nose for it :P
If you want to find a great stock metal for knives, go to a junk yard and find an old truck with leaf springs. Those things are made out of really high-ten steel, and make great knife material, from what I hear. That's what Kurkis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kukri) have been made out of since around WWI (apparently we left a crapload of trucks there...who knew :whistler: ).

Retail is $228.95 but I picked it up for $165 + 8 dollars for shipping.
G10 handle and titanium framelock. Lifetime warranty, "wave deployment", 4.8oz, a beautiful 3.9" tanto/S-belly blade... It's my dream knife. I had money set aside for school this month but found out I was actually past my 15 unit quota my recruiter asked me for so that's how I justified dropping that much on a blade.

I don't know if I have a favorite, as with these types of knives anyway, I haven't been exposed to many.
I still have the very first knife I was ever given, a Gerber LST 400 (http://images.gerbertools.com/Lg/2304_1/22-06050_Gerber_LST_LST_Ultralight.jpg), which was given to me by my grandfather when I was a little boy. I've never sharpened it to this day, even though it needs it, simply because he dulled it a bit when he gave it to me. This knife has gone through so much, even being dropped beneath an enclosed dock that I dug my way under the wood through the sand to get into just to retrieve it. I don't know what I would do without this knife. Just trying to get it back that day was one of the worst feeling moments of my life.
The other "knife" I use often is Gerber compact sport 400 (http://www.gerber-tools.com/images/Gerber-multi-plier-400-compact-sport-large-05500.gif) multitool. My fiance's mother gave that to me our first Christmas together and I have had it ever since. One of the flathead screwdriver heads chipped a little over the years, but I do love the tool to death, so haven't replaced it.
I've also got a mtech 440 combat knife her brother got me years ago for my birthday. I haven't used it since I almost stabbed myself through the crotch doing something stupid years ago, lol. (I tried to put a whole in the top of a big plastic jug to use as a coin jar, and that was the only sharp thing around. Turned out a knife wasn't the best tool for a hard plastic top. Also having the jug on your lap and pushing straight down wasn't too bright either. Luckily I wasn't hurt, lmfao).

My first true knife was a Swiss Army knife that had nearly everything in it except the kitchen sink, given to me by my paternal grandfather. Not nearly as big as this behemoth (http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/tools/8b97/), but it had a lot on it. It still resides in my tackle box.

And it finally came in. Guess what? It's a 2007 model instead of the 2009 model I was promised! I even called them to make sure! I'm pissed! They better take it back without charging me a fee! HFUidscndmkcsd
EDIT: KnifeTown told me they would contact Emerson and file for a ________(forgot what she called it) but I guess Emerson is going to send me a pre-paid shipping box to send in and replaced with an 09 model.

I happened to come across a knockoff of the Emerson Commander for 8 bucks. It's actually pretty darn close. I am in love with the wave feature and if I can carry a sexy, 8 dollar knife, why not? :D
I do feel kind of bad supporting people who are making illegal copies of a 200 dollar knife though. To be fair there are plenty of clues to give it away.
