I'm planning to scavenge the USB ports for my new build from an older computer, and have found a couple that will work well, but I don't know if the one I like best is 2.0 or not, or if there is even a difference when it comes to the actual port that a device plugs into and the cable that goes to the motherboard. One of the candidates is clearly marked 2.0 on the metal casing, but I like the other one better for spacing and size reasons. Is there a way to tell without actually hooking it to the USB headers on my motherboard and doing manual speed tests?

I am almost 100% positive that its board level. (like 99.999999993%) The extra port I added to biohazard was usb 1.0 but it is just as fast as the on board ports.

The chip is the only factor in determining the speed, for all that matters to you. USB 3.0 ports won't be identical, however, because they use fiber.
