I tried going to sleep early last night, around 9pm so I could get up around 6am and be at work by 8am.

I ended up waking up at 1am and couldn't fall back asleep so I texted my gf to see if she was still up. She was so I asked if she felt like being a little spontaneous and would like to go on a bike ride in her new area (moutainy nice area). She said yes.

To do this I had to go to the local walmart to pick up for tire patches, a bike pump and a set of bike lights and batteries. The walmart closest to me didn't have any lights so I had to drive ~20 minutes to the next closest walmart which did have what I was looking for. I then had to drive back home to set up my trunk bike rack and put on my bike. I then headed off for a 30 minute journey to my girlfriends house.

I got off on her exit and there was an older woman walking down the street at 2:30am... I decided to turn around and ask if she was ok. She said she was fine but "they're out of gas"*she points*

Now that I KNEW about someone else being in "trouble" I didn't feel it would be right to ignore them so I drove to the truck on the side of the road and two guys get out. I ask if they were alright and they said no. One guy was upset because his girlfriend (the lady I talked to) stormed off and said she would just WALK to the casino from there. The one guy asked for a ride to the nearest gas station and had an empty jug.... I was already doing a somewhat dangerous thing pulling over to help someone on an unlit, empty road at 2:30 in the morning alone so I was definitely going to avoid that. I told them my girlfriend lived close by and I'd be back with a can of gas. The guy asked if he could just siphon some fuel from my car because he was scared I would just say "screw it." I said sure but apparently there's some kind of screen blocking it.

I left and came back as promised with a gascan with ~2gallons in it. They didn't have any money and insisted on giving me something so they gave me a 10" sub in a box from their truck. I told them like 4 times "NO." but they really wouldn't listen.

The guy mentioned I was saving his ass and possibly his freedom so that kind of creeped me out... Was he wanted for something? I did smell alcohol on one of them (or both) so maybe that's what he meant.

Anyways, long story short I ended up getting home around 6am, the time I was supposed to get up so I went to work tired which made a lousy 4 hour shift feel like 10.

They didn't have any money

I'm curious (and pedantic, I know) but why were they going to the casino with no money? lol

On a more serious note, yeah you did right I think - it's hard to find a balance between looking out for yourself and looking out for someone else, especially a stranger...

Course, it's easy to say you did the right thing AFTER it all turned out ok - can't be 100% sure what I'd have done in the same situation...

EDIT: Having thought about this for more than half a second before opening my big mouth... no money probably meant no CASH - may well have had a pocketful of plastic lol

Who goes bike riding at 1 am in the morning.....

Also I am amazed that wallmart is open all night. In Australia are supermarkets close at like 11pm and then the only thing open are Gas Stations and Dodgy Kebab Shops.

Also I don't think I would have stopped.

I'd say I would have handled it about the same way.

Also I am amazed that wallmart is open all night.

I seem to live in the WalMart nexus of the multiverse. We have no less than FIVE Wal-Mart supercenters in this town, all of them open 24/7/364. We have many options to buy our cheap Chinese crap at any and all hours of the day. :)

Edit: Oh yeah, and two Sam's clubs open during normal hours for when we want our cheap Chinese crap in bulk.

i live in a town with a population of ~60,000 people give or take. we have 2 24hr walmarts. :P the sad thing is is that they are ALWAYS busy. ok, so not quite so busy @ 3-4 am but there are still people in there. lol

I guess it would be useful for late night case modding supplies but do people really need to be able to buy everything at 3 in the morning....

Hey the 3 am shopping is the way to go. Great parking spots, no idiots in your way in the aisles, and very little waiting in line at the checkouts. Sure, the security watches you and you get funny looks from some of the employees.

Wait a sec, that happens to me no matter what time I go......

I used to do that after work to wind down....

And I'm all for the 24 hour thing - I sometimes work odd hours, as does the wife and often end up going shopping at midnight or thereabouts because it's convenient for us - as long as you don't mind dodging the restocking staff lol

:stupid:

nothing better than shopping with all the methheads and crack whores @ 3 am in the morning! :P met some, er, interesting people that way :D

its actually not so bad here in idaho, when I lived in wyoming they switched the walmart to 24 hrs and holy cow the methheads came out of the woodworks! lol yay for a bunch of people with black teeth and the twitches shopping for groceries. lol sucked cause I would get off work @ 1am usually and would go swing by wallyworld for food sometimes

EDIT: sorry for the thread hijack :P

I probably wouldn't have stopped at that time, because I am a suspicious person. the only way I would stop is if they flagged me down with a flashlight or something similar.

I run on a shifted day, so late night/early morning is not that uncommon to me. Just go blind when you step out into the sun and you'll avoid it too...

Glad to see people still willing to help. My wife and I help when we can too.
