Does anyone know how good speakers that run off a USB are? They can't be a whole hell of a lot of watts

Watts are less important than the quality of the sound. ;)

I've only used one set of usb powered speakers, and they were a "good enough" solution... I dont remember the make/model, so I'm not really any help.

Which models are you talking about? Can't say for sure without knowing which models you are referring to. There are different quality speakers all up and down the line. Watts aren't everything. But stick with Logitech at the very least I would say, they make some pretty good speakers for computers.

I got a pair of these (http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.itrecyclebin.com/instock/00/000/009/00000983/pics/thumbs3/00000983_01.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.itrecyclebin.com/instock/00/000/009/00000983/itempage.php&usg=__PKmkfvo_HZFnS_SPpjRSWCApEY4=&h=422&w=554&sz=87&hl=en&start=3&sig2=x27dQPJSSe7DT3NVSc0ImQ&um=1&tbnid=ZUQ8vgpB_ECu-M:&tbnh=101&tbnw=133&prev=/images%3Fq%3DGEM2.0USB%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26cl ient%3Dfirefox-a%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26hs%3D5j5%26um%3D1&ei=RMehStSNAYr0NML5tfkP) from a garage sale. They were great while I used them.

these seem like they'd be thin.

I use a really basic set by Trust at work for my netbook when I'm watching video - they do the job and seem pretty good but I'm sure if you put them next to a high quality speaker you'd notice the difference. For what I need, they're cheap enough and do the job... They may no longer be available - there's no sign of them on www.trust.com so might not be much help...

I'm using them for my Frame Box Media Center and need them to be loud enough to hear with earplugs in, but not so loud that I wake my kids at 2 a.m.

If you're doing something at 2am loud enough to need earplugs, I don't think you need to worry about the music waking the kids lol.

On a more serious note, yeah, I think they'd work for that - they get loud enough - just not LOUD which seems to be about right for your use. You could probably mod them into the case quite easily too - quick inspection tells me there's not a lot of security in the case - gimme 5 and I'll whip 'em apart and see... I think they were about $20 - maybe a little less depending on the US/UK exchange rate....

This appears to be the next-gen of them - look different to mine but the specs seem about right....

If you can't find anything local/online, I can probably help you out...

Nice n simple - externally they look like this...

Inside...

http://www.slaveofconvention.com/imagestore/forums/speaker2.jpg

The speaker cones are just over 35mm diameter and less than 20mm deep so that seems pretty slim - as for the highlighted circle - that's where the USB cable connects to the device - it's a little obscured by the glue, but there are 4 easily accessible solder points there, so it'd probably be pretty easy to solder an internal USB 4 pin cable to it - looks better than having a cable go out and back in again...

The one shown in my last post would be a little different, I'm sure as it appears to have a volume dial built in and the ones I have do not have any volume control at all (other than windows volume of course)

can always get these guys, they are only $2.50 apiece and got pretty good reviews. I like the dual driver setup. :)

EDIT: guess I was looking at the smaller sized speaker (http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=269-484) like this, it had good reviews, this one only has one review. so good review. :P
