Well, yes that is the first reason to wait a week. The Core i5/i7 on LGA 1156 with the P55 chipset should be launched tomorrow evening at an Intel press conference.

The second reason is that AMD/ATI has a press meeting on September 10th in San Francisco. The agenda, according to the guys at SemiAccurate is the "Evergreen" launch (Radeon 5000 series).

Nvidia also has an event on the 10th, some speculate it's on GT300, but no one is expecting to see anything, volume wise on it until Q1 2010 (supposedly it's a >500mm^2 chip on the TSMC 40nm process, it's big, it's hot, and it'll fail early due to mechanical stress).

So, next week we should see massive price drops in all LGA775 stuff, older Core i7's (920 in particular), the Radeon 4000 series, and in a few weeks the GTX200 parts should drop in price to become competitive with the 5870 and 5850 (once they hit the market, of course, but that will be before October).

Personally, I'd wait until October 22nd, at that time you'll actually be able to get the new hardware coming out in the next week, and Windows 7 will be available.

well if u want hyper threading? go i7 or phenom II! but if not go ahead with the i5. i5 has no hyper threading. hey but if u want to build ur oun with a p55 chip set, MSi made a cool mobo with a one button OC called the "OC Genie" and u can tune it while the computer is on and it will change instantly in Cpu-Z. that is something they should bring to the x58 ship set!

crenn

Phenom or any AMD CPU doesn't have hyper threading or anything like it. There is actually only 1 core i5 CPU currently and it doesn't have hyperthreading. The LGA-1156 i7s do however.

So what does hyperthreading do?

OK, so the following were released today:

The Core i5 750 - 2.66Ghz, Quad core, no Hyperthreading - 210USD

The Core i7 850 - 2.8Ghz, Quad core, Hyperthreading - 300USD

The Core i7 860 - 2.93Ghz, Quad core, Hyperthreading - 580USD

These are all on the LGA 1156 socket, yes there are Core i7s on LGA 1156 :dead:

The prices are the Newegg ones, it'll take a while for things to settle down a bit. Again, I wouldn't buy anything right now as prices will fluctuate and settle down after the initial buy rush is over.

I would stay away from the green drives to run the OS on if you want performance. I believe most of the are 5400 rpm....great for massive storage though. I have a Tb and love it.

I have a WD green drive, and honestly, I don't notice any hit in performance. I mean, maybe if I tried, and really put it through it's paces, sure.... But for everyday use its just fine.

Either you're being sarcastic or you are mistaking HyperTransport for Hyper Threading.

HyperTransport is the point to point interconnect that AMD uses to communicate between CPUs in a multi chip system, and between a CPU and "North bridge" chipset. Intel's answer to HyperTransport is QPI on the LGA 1366 Core i7s and on the Xeon server lines.

Hyper Threading, known also as SMT (simultaneous multi threading), is a technique that allows one physical core run "two" process threads at a time. It works off the principle that some threads only use part of the processor (whether it is the FPU or other parts). Since some silicon is sitting idle, a second thread could be executed on the idle part of the chip. Note that this only yields performance gains if the two threads use different parts of the chip, otherwise the second thread is halted until the first is done with execution, causing a performance hit. Newer operating systems, including Windows 7, will not put a thread on a virtual processor (the one hosted on the Hyper Threading logic) if there is a performance hit in doing so. Intel introduced Hyper Threading in the Pentium 4 to make up for it's increasingly long execution pipeline. They then revived it for the Core i7 line. Sun's SPARC T1 supports SMT as well. AMD, as of now, does not have a chip with SMT. And, ironically, AMD was going to introduce a function that allows to cores execute one thread faster than a single core executing it.

Really, AMD is the way to go for a budget build. Yeah, there are cheap Intel processors, and quite frankly I typically prefer Intel, but if the money is tight I recommend AMD.

Not tryin to start an Intel vs. AMD war here ppl
