I would put my money on the 4890, but I would wait until the 5000 series which should be out any time

I'm not sure this is actually a question; how could you ever put the 260 core and the 4890 in the same sentence?
Jeez....4890 ftw, I got money on it

I'd second that, within the next week all of the NDAs associated with the HD 5000 series will be removed, and parts should show up shortly after, if not at the same time. By the time Windows 7 is released, the 4800 series will be EOL'ed, and probably on sale for some super deep discounts.

Just what I wanted... Any of the low grade 5000 series going to be better than the 4890?
Given those two, I'd go with the 4890.
Didn't you ask this same thing about a week ago?

Supposedly, the 5770 should perform slightly faster than the 4870, and use less power (looks like the 5770 should be comparable with the 850Mhz clocked version of 4890 for everything that isn't overly memory intensive, it has half the memory bus). However, the 5700 series will not be available until the October to November time frame. We should know more once the NDA drops (think of a deluge of performance reviews).
Of the two choices the 4890 is definitely the better card. I don't know if any of the 5700 series will beat it or not (the 5800 series cards will, but I haven't seen specs on the 5700 cards which will be in the 100 USD to 200 USD price range).

4890 would win.. but the 260 for photo editing is better... trust me I been there and have both..
from the reviews the Gigabyte GTX260 Super Overclocked edition peforms better than the 4870, 4890, and 49xx series, and even better than the 55xx series, there on par with the GTX 285
