View Full Version : Modding a portable speaker?

I have a Altec Lansing portable battery powered speaker and I was just wondering if there is any way to modify it so it could be plugged into a power outlet so it no longer requires batteries to power on? I'm currently using it for my computer since I don't have any computer speakers for it and the batteries don't very long so its pretty inconvenient.

I was thinking about how you can light up a light bulb by connecting a wire to it that then connects to both ends of a battery and that then led to the thought of what if I could take a power cable and connect the wires to the battery prong mahjiggers in the speaker.

Anyone have any clue about this kind of thing? Is it even possible? It kind of makes sense that it would be possible somehow, since that's all batteries are is contained power. But I have the inkling that the power from an outlet will be too strong. But there must be some way to do it... It's probably going to end up being too much effort or out of my skill range. But who knows, I just thought I'd ask on the off chance that it won't be too difficult.

Thanks in advance!

It's fairly simple - all you need is a DC power supply - what batteries does it take and how many? All you need to do is work out the voltage requirements by adding the batteries up (usually 1.5v per battery) if it isn't written on the speaker, then get an alternative DC power source with close or the same voltage and wire it to the terminals... Old cellphone chargers etc - if you're lucky, and it's 6v total (4 batteries) you might even get away with using USB power (only 5v but you never know...)

Wait, never mind. I figured out a solution. I remembered I had an old karaoke machine out in the garage and so I took one of the speakers and spliced its audio cable with a male audio cable end (I have a huge box of random parts like that. lol) and voila! Instant no power needed speaker! Of course, since its not powered, it doesn't get very loud. Even when I have the volume completely up its only about normal, but that's more than adequate. I just can't blast NIN any more. T_T :p

I can make it louder by playing files under VLC, since its volume goes up to 400%. Is there any kind of software that does that so I don't have to use VLC to play everything? (Although, I do that anyways. lol)
