So the show premiered today. It's shot totally like Battlestar Gallactica. Kind of dark, with sex scenes and will probably flop in two years. Thanks for destoying such an amazing franchise:(

I beg to differ, it was awesome. And completely epic.

Also I feel good things should not be dragged on to just to make a never ending series, only Dr. Who pulled that off.

Haven't seen it yet, but I'll catch it when I can. I'm very hesitant about it though. As soon as I saw the kid I thought Transformers meets Stargate meets Battlestar Galactica - in other words, the show looks like a bastard child of two good shows and an okay movie. So I don't know.. it looks.. not that great yet at the same time it looks like it has potential. Just lose the kid really. (at least, that's going off of a haven't seen it yet just the previews impression)

I've got it set to record because I am stuck at work every Friday. Hopefully the baby in all her button pushing doesn't undo the settings and I get to watch when I get home. I hope it lasts longer then 2 years. I've felt no other Stargate series has been able to touch the original SG-1. I loved SG-1, liked Atlantis. Was devistated when 1 finished, sad when Atlantis ended. I'm hoping this series can fill that gap. Maybe this will be it. I hate when a good show turns to crap because new writers show up and say lets do it this way. Leave my shows ALONE! I hate change. Anyway back to work, then home real fast to watch this. I'll probably be back in after to cry to cheer.

Personally I really enjoyed it. It's an interesting premise.
@Zephik: I actually like the kid; he provides a nice contrast with the more experienced personnel, and I think will serve as an excellent catalyst for character development with that jackass doctor.

I thought it was really good. I do hope this will stick around for a while. I had to close at work 1-2am on Friday so I had to record it. I couldn't wait till the next night to watch so I watched it when I got home. 2am at home then 2 hours of Stargate 3 hours of sleep then back to work at 8am, lol. I hate it when they get a bigger name in the premiers and then kill them off in the first 1 or 2 episodes. They did it on Atlantis with Robert Patrick and then on Universe with Christopher McDonald.

They're also releasing it on Hulu, if you forget to record it.

Awesome! My recorder is on the bottom of the entertainment center and the baby likes to push buttons.

i dont really know what to think of it
i loved sg1
liked atlantis but a little less
and sgu is just like meh
im really trying to give it a chance i feel like it could be good but the whole no contact with earth thing is dumb
also they didnt even introduce an enemy yet

Yea well for the first season or so of SGA they didn't have very much or any contact if I remember correctly. I have a feeling they arnt just going to have a single enemy like the Wrath. There is some stuff that good like the enemy wont get stale but then you dont really get the story behind the enemy. So far its good enough in my books. I think they really have a high standard but they can live up to it if they try.

Atlantis didn't introduce the Wraith until quite a few episodes in either, iirc.

maybe im wrong but i thought that like in the first or second episode the leader of the atlantis team at the time got life drain killed by a wraith queen

It may have been the second, I'll check when I get home, but the first was entirely "Oh hey, we got this address, let's go there! Sure, why not! *group goes through stargate* Woah, we're like, underwater! ...HOLY CRAP!!! WE'RE TAKING ON WATER!! WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!!! ..oh wait, no, actually we're not.."

EDIT:
whoops, sorry, I was forgetting that the first two episodes were joined...so, yeah, I guess the Wraith were in the first episode.

Though tbh, I think killergamer is right in saying that there probably won't be a constant enemy, I just don't think it would fit well into the premise.

It just pisses me off how quickly they ended Atlantis. Especially when they had just introduced that cool rogue/evil Asgard race.

Finally got around to watching it and watched the first/second episode.

Awesome.

Me too - I watched it last week but forgot to come say something lol - I didn't think it was bad at all - certainly has the potential to be something interesting. It does have a big Star Trek Voyager thing going on though - long long way from home, not sure if it's possible to get back, mixture of military and civilian, more than one "leader" - actually, chunk of Battlestar in there too - but if it's done well it could be good....

From what I have heard they are working on a movie to tie up all the loose ends with Atlantis but yes I am also mad that we didnt get to learn more about the rogue/evil Asgards. They were more there just to start the conflict between SGA Team and Tom. I loved Tom and did they clear up all the loose ends of the replicators I THINK NOT!

Bit late coming into this because I was reserving judgment till I had watched a couple episodes. I too like some others had mentioned enjoyed Stargate Sg1 and Atlantis. But Stargate universe has been really hard to get into. Seems as though Syfy is going the route of cheaper design(no off world expeditions, crazy cgi, big explosions) and more drama. It's like Lost meets Battlestar Galactica.

Spoiler: (Highlight to view)

Found it funny in the third episode when Scott is wandering around in the desert suffering from heat exhaustion. Yet he’s wearing all black clothing, yea that’s smart.|

Haha, yeah, you make a good point about ep 3. I wondered why they did that myself..I know from experience that doesn't work well. :dead:

So, I just saw episode 10 today...and I have officially lost all hope for the series. Why must they destroy something that had so much promise?

12-07-2009, 12:18 AM
Now you have me worried. I'm already upset that episode is the "Season Finally" (don't even get me going on that bunch of BS) but its getting worse and worse. Usually they have Universe ready On Demand by Saturday but it wasn't there yesterday (sucks to work nights on Fridays) so now maybe it will be there when I get home and then I can cry. I thought this series had potential. I'll have to judge when I get home though.

It's on Hulu as well; that's how I've been following it...and if it were costing my anything more than the time to watch it (which can be mitigated by multi-tasking), I would probably drop it...as is, I'm still holding out a tiny bit of hope that it'll turn around...yeah, I know, I'm a sucker  At least for the first 6 episodes we actually had stuff happening with the ship and stuff that they find...not that there wasn't idiotic drama in those first 6...it just wasn't the only thing there. And now that they've essentially killed off Rush, I really don't see it pulling itself out of the hole that it dug. :(

My dad brought up a good point that they did the time travel screwy wormhole thing and never completed the story line. Maybe with what happens in the spoiler, couldn't resist, it can still turn around on another time line.

So maybe I'm just an ever hopeful fool, but I was holding out a little bit of hope that the second half of the season would be better... ...well, I guess it is a bit, but it's not that hard when you have such low expectations. People are still being whiny little b****es, but at least we had some action and Rush is back, even if it was a crazy Deus Ex Machina moment.

haven't watched the new episode yet (will tonight), but I have to say I think I like this better than the original 2 shows so far. and I loved both of those. At least in the first half of the season, instead of introducing an external enemy, they're exploring how the group of people, the collective if you will, can end up being the enemy of the individual, a premise I think that's very realistic.
I much prefer the focus on character development than pure action, which is something that overall I felt was lacking in the first two shows. They did it sometimes, and more in Atlantis than SG-1, but compared to a show like Lost, which is really nothing BUT character development (yeah I know there's a lot more in it than that :D) the first 2 stargate shows didn't have much character development. It seems to me that they're trying to take that tack in SGU, and IMHO, succeeding. These are characters whose outlook will change over time as a result of their experiences, unlike SG1 and SGA, where the characters really didn't change much.
So yeah, that's my 2 cents :)

Well, personally I loath Lost...interestingly, it seems for pretty much the same reason you like it; too much focus on people complaining about each other, and nothing actually happening (at least not anything that made any sense). Ah well, to each their own, eh?

I think there was quite a bit of character development in SG-1 and SGA, but it revolved around challenges being presented and the characters rising to those challenges and overcoming them...not [character x] whining about what [character y] is doing (or not doing), and why what they want to do (or not do) is so much more important. If the characters in Universe do actually change over time then that will help, but so far (imo) they started out with two camps: civilians and military. These camps are completely and utterly segregated, and both are absolutely convinced that the other camp is conspiring against them and needs to be destroyed. The politicians are the worst, imo. What it really feels like to me is like they took a bunch of middle schoolers, dumped them in a box, and ran away. I may be biased, but it seems like it keeps going around a never ending loop of 'scientists find something', 'military tries to figure out what to do with it', 'civilians are confused', 'politicians decide that military is conspiring against them and turn all cilivians against the military'. ...kinda like the real world, come to think of it... I always found SG-1 and Atlantis refreshing because there was a clear chain of command and even when that wasn't followed, there was a trust sustained between the characters that they were all acting in the group-as-a-whole's interest. I also think the communication stones were a mistake to bring into the picture because they turned it into them just running back to their various superiors on Earth whenever they have a problem instead of actually trying to resolve it themselves. Too much 'waah! I'm gonna go tell Mom!' and not enough logical discussion. You mention it being about how the collective can turn against the individual, and I do see that a lot, but to me it seems just as often to be about how the individual can turn the collective against another individual for their own personal gain.

You say SG-1 and SGA are too much about the action, but they are action sci-fi! They're about science and action, that's it. Anything else is secondary. Then with Universe they turned it into a drama...and alienated their biggest fanbase (imo).

Anyways, all comes down to personal preference, I guess.

don't get me wrong - I loved the action in SG1 and SGA. Those shows were loads of fun and my girlfriend and I would watch several episodes in a row on our DVDs. Incidentally, that's how I watched seasons 1-5 of Lost. Back to back. Now I'm watching Season 6 as it airs, and let me tell you, the show is absolutely riveting when you watch the episodes back to back. I don't know if I would have stuck with it had I not watched them on DVD. But...this is about the SG series :) .. so back to that.

I just think that SG1 and SGA could have done with a bit more character change over time, in addition to the other aspects of the shows. I liked Rodney's character arc, but I think he's really the only one who changed noticeably over the course of the show. Ronan was cool but really just an extra grumpy Teal'c. And I think what I like better about SGU is the bigger emphasis on reaction to character deaths and such. I often felt in SG1 and SGA someone dies, and nobody really cared, outside of the episode that the death happened. Even for the bigger characters, like Dr. Frasier (whose death episode IMO was brilliantly done), it's like emotionally everyone sorta forgets about them. Maybe that's just the way the military mindset is. But I found it jarring to some extent. The SGU characters in that respect feel a little more real to me. And, being a huge fan of BSG, I like the filming approach they're taking with SGU. I don't mind that it's similar, in some ways it's like getting to watch a new version of BSG. not nearly as good, mind you - it would take a lot to top BSG. So yeah. I understand where you're coming from. I just try not to have my expectations for anything set too high - that way I can sit back and enjoy the show. :)

The show is boring. Waaaaay too much like Battlestar, with the whining and crying. I only watch it for that hot Elyse Levesque as Chloe Armstrong
