Fiance came home from her nanny job with a bag with two laptops and chargers in it.
1 - 700Mhz 256Mb 30GB G3 iBook
~Video Problems
2 - Win 98 Dell Laptop
~Supposedly doesn't turn on, haven't checked anything on it.
My eyes lit up when I saw the iBook, lol.
Turned the iBook on and within minutes the screen went all scrambly and it finally shut itself down. Tore it down, put 4 thin aluminum shims between the gpu and the metal shield, then 4 between the shield and the plastic casing. Turned on and ran fine. Ran itunes visualizer for 2 hours fullscreen without any issues. =) Yay.
-probably should do a reflow-

Fiance came home from her nanny job with a bag with two laptops and chargers in it. That line just sounds funny to me...not calling your fiance a thief, but it just doesn't sound legit. :)
"where did you get these?"
"i found them in their house"
lol
I think it's because you didn't specify that they were given to her or scavenged.
Awesome job with the shims though!
I wish my GF would bring over bags of electronic goodies. :(

LMFAO, yes, I guess it does sound like that. No, the dad is a really nice guy and is constantly trying to give her things to give to me to see if I could use it. They gave her a usb mouse/keyboard to give to me a few months ago too.
They were broken and in storage since like 2004, so when they found them and they didn't work they asked her if I could use them for something, and she brought them home to me.
The ibook shims seems to have worked okay for now. I really need to get a heatgun and attempt a reflow. If you move the laptop around it starts artifacting, or if you put too much pressure on the wrist rest, it does it a bit too. But not moving/putting pressure on it, it seems to work fine. USB keyboard/mouse would solve these issues, at least on a temporary basis.
Edit: Reinstalled OS 10.3, and updating now.

Here is a quick pic for those who need visual stimulation, albeit horrible lighting and such. Too late in the day to change that. 8)

The other laptop is a Dell Latitude CPx. I don't know what was wrong with it. She told me he said a whole bunch of things were wrong with it, but a clean install of windows 2000, and everything seems great. I really like this one. It feels like I could really beat on it, not that I would, I just like the feel of it.
P3 650Mhz 256MB 10GB. Has Dual batteries, which I haven't been able to check if they hold any amount of charge, but in setup they were in fact charging. Has a floppy and a cd drive that can be swapped in place of one of the batteries. Pretty nice little machine, and so far I've found nothing wrong with it. woot!

Nice! And Thanks!
Posting on the CPx now. Works well. Installed Windows 2000, and had to install a wpa supplicant to access my wifi. Nice little laptop, if a bit slow. It has quite a noisy little hard drive. You can just hear the whine of the drive spinning constantly. If only there were ssd's for whatever old interface this drive is (haven't checked).
