I don't know how new this actually is, but I ran across the Bifferboard earlier today:
http://bifferos.bizhat.com/

It's very tempting because it provides the low power-usage that you want in an embedded system (consumes ~1W), but is still the familiar x86 architecture. Additionally, it's only ~$46 each (~$41 each if you buy 5 or more). There are even writeups by people who have gotten it running Debian, Slackware, and Gentoo, so even familiar software :D

I had been planning on doing an embedded system sometime soonish with a Beagleboard (http://beagleboard.org/), which is more powerful, but costs ~3x as much, consumes ~2x as much power, and is ARM-based (not a bad thing, I'm just more familiar with x86). I'm thinking I might try this instead.

The sad thing is that this would about compare in performance to the $1400 P-166 Compaq that my parents got back in '98....

What are your plans for it?

Haha, I hadn't decided that far in advance, but one of the things I want to do is set up a system so I can call one of my computers, enter a code, and it'll unlock my patio door. I know I could have one of my existing systems do that, but it would be fun to have a little embedded system doing it instead :D Also, it would serve as a nice, easy, mobile servo master controller when used with serial servo controllers; it'd be great for prototyping.

I can see tons of uses for sometihng like this. :D

I just had an awesome idea for a cheap NAS with LCD output.
3.5" USB enclosure + Bifferboard + this guy's work with keychain LCDs (http://www.noshbar.co.cc/biff/) == mini NAS with LCD status/etc on the cheap.

...now I just need to wait till I have the money to blow on it...

EDIT:
I bet this would also work for something like what craigbru used a picoITX for in his Rogue mod...a LOT cheaper than a picoITX though :D

I took a look and decided that it could be useful... but since I'm starting to make my own microcontroller boards, I think I'll build my own ;)
