Lcd tv question

Hope this is the right place guys i have a LCD tv question .
I dont have one yet my wifes grandmother got a new LCD the other day.

I haven't been over to her house but my Father-in-Law said the picture is all stretched out and sometimes squisshed down .
The things i know she has satellite but not an HD receiver .
I am guessing that it trying to Up convert or Down convert .
How would i fix this i just any tips you guys have i have heard of this but cant remember the fix

HD tvs have a setting that you can stretch the picture of a 4:3 to a 16:9 ratio. However when you do this, some tvs continue to stretch the normal 16:9 picture.

They are all different when it comes to this setting, so you're going to have to try to find it in the owner's manual.
