Turns out in Japan they actually buy these guys in pet shops because they eat spiders. I guess most of them can't penetrate human skin so they are harmless... but creepy as hell nonetheless.
Almost forgot, it's called a geji bug or house-centipede. (Note: the picture does not do its size justice.)

Thats what those are huh. I've seen them in the basement and squashed them when I get the chance. I might have to stop because I have a fear of spiders. You're right about the size, feak you right out when you see one crawling around on the floor.
I've never seen one, about what size are they?

the one that we found in our house in MA had to be at least 3-4" long.

i would probably kill that thing too. creepy looking little bastard.
 Holy crap that's big!
Though they do seem to be quite useful creatures; eating a bunch of insects that actually damage stuff. I spent a little time reading up on them on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scutigera_coleoptrata).. They also seem pretty intelligent, apparently modifying their hunting techniques depending on the prey. And get this; if they are in danger of being caught, they can detach limbs at will!

i've got those!
but not a lot thank god. they freak me out because they run so dam fast.
i can handle the babies (1-2mm long) but the big ones are about 2" long.
the cats love'em though.

Our dog will occasionally eat those. Even if they're harmless, I really don't like insects living in my house.

As I look at this I can't help but wonder.... Why the F**K did it evolve to have so many damn legs.
Edit: I guess the obvious answer is so it can loose them and escape from predators.
