View Full Version : HAF Mod 932
So I cancelled Project Scintillation when I cam across the HAF 932 case by Cooler Master. It does exactly what I've been trying off and on to complete for the last few years; cleanly hide my radiator...
It's been rather tedious work over this last week creating the sketchup model to scale and I'm still not done, but this is where I'm at with it. It also shows the color scheme I intend to use.

To get started, I stripped every removable part out of the case and was left with this.

After about an hour of drilling out riviets, (there's a million of them on this case), I had this...

After taping off the original black coat of paint, I ran some twine between the trees in my backyard and began priming my dismantled case.

After...

While the primer dries, I began work on another part of this case.

Hopefully I can get to putting some color to the primed pieces tomorrow.

Ooohhh nice. I was literally just looking at that case as a possible case for Mark2... Very nice can't wait to see what you do with it

I must say that this case is a beast. There's planty of room in it for my water cooling setup. I'm looking forward to seeing how this turns out too. Right now it's pretty much just paint, but who knows, maybe I'll get some inspiration for some custom mods; something more than just paint.
Update...
So I got some more painting done today until it started raining and I had to move everything to the garage. I also got some work done on my
home-made reservoir. Leaked tested and approved...

Hey guys...
I came acrossed this pic of a haf 932. The guy painted the HAF letters on the side panel. It came out very clean, but I'm not sure how he accomplished this. Any ideas??

Depends on how clean you want it to be, and how complex the letters you choose to use are. I use automotive repair products in my projects and have something called "fine-line tape" - it's basically a 3mm wide plastic masking tape - you put your design down in the tape, leaving the area you want to paint inside the tape, then you use regular masking tape and masking paper to get the rest of the case covered up. The idea is, you have regular masking tape half covering the fineline tape - but NOT the inner edge, and then tape the paper to the regular tape. Another alternative is to use some kind of stencil but depending on how much pressure you're using to push the paint, beware that a high pressure system like a compressor may well push paint under the edges of a stencil.

Cover the whole logo with blue painters tape and use a razor to cut out the logo?
that would be my guess, but it does look very slick.
nice to see a HAF that isn't painted red and black :P.

LOL... It's funny you say that because I originally wanted to do black with metallic red accents because my current case is blue and black.. Due to an error on a purchase I made from the going out of business Xoxide.com, instead it's gonna be blue on black; hey that could be the name of the mod... The Cooler Master fans I ordered were supposed to have red leds, but instead I received fans with blue ones. So far I'm happy with how it's turning out.
I thought about taping of the logo, but my prior experience still produces over spray. I want a nice sharp edge on the letters. I was thinking there may be some kind of rubbery material I could apply with a brush around the logo, then tape of the remaining area. Apply the paint, then remove the rubbery material. i swear I've seen something like that before...
Thanks for tips though guys. i'll let you know what the final decision is and you'll see how it turns out.

That's what I was talking about - the fine-line tape is a flexible plastic masking tape - it leaves a perfect edge - then you use regular paper masking tape to expand the width of the fineline tape, making sure that the inner edge of the fineline is untouched by the paper tape, then mask the rest off with paper - masking paper, newspaper, whatever...

The case doesn't have a smooth finish too it. It has a nice finish but the paint has some texture to it. I'll try to take a pic to show what I mean. I have a feeling that even with flexible masking tape, I may still see some overspray. I found some stuff on a Google search that is a liquid mask. I think overall that may provide the best solution when dealing with the texture. We'll see though... Thanks again for the tips.
Not too much happening on the mod so far this week. I had a few small runs in the paint, wet sanded then out and added another coat. I'm thinking I'll be able to start the reassembly of the case this weekend.
I've decided to, when i have the time, pick up some liquid masking tape to outline the letters that are already painted on the case, and fill them in with the same color blue I'm using inside the case. The picture below shows where the lettering/logo is on the case...

One thing you can do to get a clean edge is mask it off the paint one light coat of the same color as the background. This way the only bleed through at the edge won't be seen. I've done this when painting stripes or two tones an it works very nicely. If your not painting the outside of the case you could just use a clear coat to get the same result, then clear the whole case.

Yep, you can easily use a PCI-E 1x card in a 16x slot. I needed an extra NIC for mine but my sound card populated the only PCI slot and my vid card covers the only PCI-E 1x slot. Some quick googling revealed that you can use any smaller PCI-E card in a larger slot. I now have my second NIC as a PCI-E 1x card in a 16x slot, works great.
Thanks for the info!! My mind is set then... ASUS P6T6 WS Revolution it is!!
Well I got a little bit more done today; reassembled the case and got some more work done on the reservoir.
After gluing the ends of the reservoir in place, I began to see some bubbling in the seams, ans some wierd effect on the walls of the reservoir. I don't think I can do much better, so I decided I should try to hide what I didn't like. To do that, I frosted the reservoir walls. Sorry I don't have pices of the work in progress...
I got the frosted effect by first sanding the reservoir with 120 grit sandpaper. Then followed that up with multiple wet sanding up to 800 grit sandpaper. I've also decided I will light the reservoir with 2 ultra bright LEDs.
To hide the bubbling in the seams, I searched all week for some vinyl end caps that I was going to glue in place. When I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for, I remembered about this stuff called Plasti Dip.
http://www.my-pc-nerd.com/mod/haf-932/100_1428.jpg
I poured some into a little metal pan, and dipped one end of my reservoir in it. Hopefully this works to hide the bubbleing and add an additional layer of leak protection.

Case Reassembly
After almost 75 rivets, the case is finally reassembled. Here are some pics of the new look.

I still have more work to do and more parts to complete reassembly. Plenty of work to do to prep for the watercooling and completing the reservoir.
I also have an inspiration from another TBCS member to make another addition to the mod. But you'll have to wait and see what it his.
Until next time...
I've turned my attentions to the lettering on the side panel of the HAF 932 case. Glossy lettering is already there, but it doesn't show as well as I'd like it to. So after some contemplation on how I could cleanly color the lettering in without screwing up the existing paint, I came up with the following.
For reference, here's what the case lettering looked like before I got my hands on it.
http://pcgear.bg/home/components/com_virtuemart/shop_image/product/COOLERMASTER_HAF_4941366a09c70.jpg
To begin I went to the hobby store just down the street from my house and picked up some small brushes and liquid masking tape.
http://www.my-pc-nerd.com/mod/haf-932/100_1440.jpg
http://www.my-pc-nerd.com/mod/haf-932/100_1442.jpg
Then I spent about an hour or so masking the outlines of the lettering. Here's what that looked like.
http://www.my-pc-nerd.com/mod/haf-932/100_1438.jpg
http://www.my-pc-nerd.com/mod/haf-932/100_1439.jpg
http://www.my-pc-nerd.com/mod/haf-932/100_1443.jpg
http://www.my-pc-nerd.com/mod/haf-932/100_1445.jpg
After the liquid masking dried, I layed down a couple of coats of metallic blue paint. Here, you can barely see the lettering through the paint.
http://www.my-pc-nerd.com/mod/haf-932/100_1448.jpg
http://www.my-pc-nerd.com/mod/haf-932/100_1449.jpg
Sometime this afternoon, I'll pull out the airbrush and attempt to give the lettering some highlight. Some time today, I'll post the completed lettering.
until next time...(Later today).

That paint looks great! Good work man!
For those of you viewing this worklog, please review the pictures below and tell me your thoughts? Should I keep this or make the lettering solid blue? I kinda like it, but at the same time, I'm not completely satisfied...

dont know if its intentional, but i LOVE the form of the a and f! solid colour would look bad IMO, but you could try and redo it, with a smoother fading between the two blues?

It was intentional as the lettering looks that way to start, not to that degree though. I need some more practice with the airbrush before I go further, but I'll probably end up redoing it.
Thanks for your input guys. Keep it coming.
After some thought and staring at the paint job, I've decided I'm unhappy with it. I'll be redoing it starting with the masking tonight.
After 3 total attempts with the lettering, I have finally gotten something I'm happy with. After some cleanup I'll post some pics; hopefully tonight.
So instead of taking pictures last night of the side panel to the case, I decided to re-make my reservoir... and make it BIGGER. i'm at work now, but I'll post some pics of both tonight.
Alright boys and girls...
As promised, here are the pics of my progress thus far.
The lettering on the side panel needs a little clean up. It's kinda plain from the earlier attempts, but I think it matches the case better. A little bit of clean up/touch up work and it'll be good to go.
http://www.my-pc-nerd.com/mod/haf-932/100_1453.jpg
The second build of a much larger reservoir. This one came out alot better than the other one I did. I was going to use a danger den fill port, but I have no way to install it now... I wasn't thinking when I glued the top piece in place. So instead I'll use a G1/4" threaded plug and install an LED in it to make this puppy glow. ...hopefully

Very much like what you have done!
Question: Do you apply paint directly over the case letters without any prep sanding or cleaning? What brand of paint did you use? I would like to paint my HAF case letters as well! Thanks!

Thanks Joker.
For the third attempt, I put down 2 light coats of primer and 3 light coats of blue metallic paint. Overall it came out quite decent. I highly recommend the liquid mask. If you use it, be sure to apply the mask quite heavely. The thinner areas of the mask were a little more difficult to remove and caused a little bit of scuffing when I was removing it. That's some of the scuffing you see around the letters; most noteably beneath the 'A'.
Not much happening since my last update.
I have however decided to include a nice LARGE window on the side of my case. Here's where I'm at with this...

I like how this has really opened up the side of the case and this should make seeing the hardware inside ALOT easier. I do intend to install 4 120mm fans onto the plexiglass that will make the window.
Until next time...
So not much has been going on since my last update, school has gotten rather busy. I did pick up some passive rads to add to this mod from 985323 (aka Will). He gave me a great deal on them and shipped them uber quick. THANKS WILL!!!
So with the new rads I had the idea to put them in a windtunnel. Below are the renders of my idea. Beyond the rendering, I haven't gotten much of anything done. Hopefully over the next couple of weeks I'll make some progress.

Not much of an update on the progress of the build, I've been saving funds to get the upgrades for this build. I ordered them this morning. The list is a bit different than I had posted previously, but I think it will serve my purposes just the same. I decided to step back on some of the parts to save money and allow me to get a couple of water cooling upgrades. Overall, I think I'll have similar, if not the same performance for less money and better cooling equipment.

When I get these part in, I'll be able to sell off my older equipment and have some funds to continue the mod. I don't really have a lot left to buy, but with the holidays, the funds are falling short for my ambitions.
Until next time...

Hey Remy,
I'm new to the case modding scene and i came across what you have done and to be honest i was amazed!!
I was thinking of doing a similar thing to my HAF.
I was just wondering what kinds of Primer and paints you used to do the internal pieces of the case.
Also, where abouts are you putting your radiator, cos there is room at the top of the case for a 240x120 radiator, but im lead to believe this is not a good idea since your keeping the heat inside the case.
Id just like to know ur thoughts.
Cheers

Thanks for the comments. :)
For the primer I used your basic primer, nothing special. As for the colors, I used a black semi-gloss and rustoleum's Metal-Spek (I think that's what it's called...); blue of course.
As for the radiator placement, I have considered the heat inside the case but have decided it's not an issue. There is so much airflow through the case that I feel it eliminates the potential problem. I will be mounting my 3x120 rad at the top of the case and using stand-offs for the fans to get maximum airflow over the radiator fins.
I will likely be dismantling the case again as I'm not completely satisfied with the paint job. Also, with the plexi window I will be installing, I have to do some trimming on the rear of the case so it will fit.
I was thinking of investigating sandblasting to remove every last spec of paint, polishing, then clearcoating the bare metal to a mirror for a kind of chrome effect. We'll see... I have to find some test pieces off an old case to determine how it would look.
Thanks again for the comments.
Remy
nice m8!
i got a huge concern though, and your not gonna like it.
thoose passive rads are made from alu, and when in contact with all the copper elements in your system it will end in tears:(
the idea is cool as hell, but the radiators wont do you much good (they arent that effecient, and are not gonna do the biggest difference on a hotheaded core i7!)
the 120.3 will give you sufficient cooling for the i7, but if you are going to cool the 2 260īs then i would suggest more radiator power.
oh, and you wont need that ram cooler:P
i can only say good for that cpu block though. if you want something a liiittle better, then go for a heatkiller 3.0 full copper version. thats the best waterblock outhere.
gonna follow this:)

I understand the corrosive properties between different metals. I was planning on using a coolant that included corrosion inhibitors. Similar to marine coolant or this http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/feonef1coflu.html Has anyone tried the feser coolant?
I also understand that the rads won't do much in the passive state, but they will do a little more with 2 30 cfm fans each. The rads are going to be used primarily as eye candy (RAM Cooler too :smoker: ). I like they way they look and I think they'll go well with the case. Thanks for bringing those things to attention though. It's always good to be reminded in the event something gets forgotten.
As for the waterblock. It's the only i7 block that newegg had so it's the one I got. I don't plan on overclocking too much. I will initially try to match the Intel flagship processor and monitor the temps from there. If I'm not comfotable with what I see, I'll back off the clockings a bit.
Thanks again for the comments and info.

for watercooling products, go with sidewindercomputers instead. gary (the owner) is a nice guy, and you wont ever have problems if you miss something or stuff like that.
this is the block i am talking about
http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/heatkiller1366.html
if you want, this is the updated version of the block you choosed, wich performs better (almost as good as the heatkiller, but is a tad more risistent)
http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/swapxtcpuwa.html
you wont get around corrosion even with anti corrosive fluid. ive been there trust me. if you want to do anything, then go dual loops, and cool the ram with the passive rads, and keep all alu out of the cpu loop.
also, theese radiators is better than the one you mentioned earlier:)
http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/hwlasrse.html
iīve tryid the feeser coolant, and it will miscolor your blocks and hoses. i would go with either destiled water + silver kill coil or petraīs nuke (http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/peptcobi1.html), or koolance fluid. (koolance makes some crappy products, but i like their coolant.. its just expensive as hell though)
you could put some fruit color in the destiled water if you want it colored.

I was a bit nervous myself, but it's actually not hard. They slide out to the rear of the case. You just got to get them over the the little notch on their left side and they slide right out. They seem pretty strong for plastic so as long as you don't go Incredible Hulk on them, they should withstand your attempts to get them out.
Got my newegg shipment today... Everything looks beautiful. I'll get some pics posted of the bundle that will be waiting for this case in a little while.
After looking at my stuff, I realized that my mobo box said crossfire compatible, but not SLi... The Asus P6T SE doesn't support it... Newegg was kind enough to Refund RMA it for me as it was return for same item only (LOVE NEWEGG). Once the funds have been refunded to my account, I'll be getting the ASUS P6T motherboard; $50 more than the SE.
Until Next Time!!
Hey Everyone... It's been a couple weeks since my last post. Nothing much has been happening, but the project is still alive. Ordering a new motherboard tomorrow and probably won't be doing much until after the new year due to xmas and low finances. I'll keep everyone posted when there's something to actually update...

this is a very nice build, i'm really looking forward to seeing it get finished.
i have the same case, i was thinking about doing a similar window mod but i'm not sure how to mount the fan yet.
i'm really excited to see what you end up doing as far as the window and any lighting.
it's an awesome job so far!
hope you get some more money soon so you can finish it up!
Well I finally got a break from work and school so I thought I'd spend some time working on the mod. I also gat the memory, cpu and mobo from newegg, so the motivation to push forward has increased. Anyhow, this is a short update, but I'll post more as it progresses.
So I've been working on the designs (measurements and placement) for the last couple weeks for a shroud within the case. The idea is to hide as many wires as possible as well as the pump and 120.3 radiator for the water loop. I was planning on sheet metal for fabricating the shroud, but I had a bunch of styrene left from another project and thought I'd use it. Here's a few shots of what I've come up with.
The shroud mocked up and in place...

I had to make some cuts to give access to the SATA, power and front panel cables. A bit fuzzy, but I'll post clearer pics when I get a chance to.
Openings for the SATA, PATA, and power cables...

Openings for the front panel, USB and 1394 pins...

Finally, the shroud mock up with the door in place. Still need a piece of plexi for the door. I'll probably get that tomorrow.

Until next time. Thanks for looking.

Well folks. This mod has gone as far as it can. I have ideas and things that I'd like to do with it, but I just don't have the time, money, or energy to do it right now. So for all intensive purposes, this mod is complete. I will be adding some molding to the side window and will eventually get the Cape Cora radiators installed at some point. Until that time comes, below is the final product.
System Specs:
CPU - Core i7 920 (OC'd to 3.0 GHz @ max.90 degree F w/ 70 degree F ambient room temperature)
Memory - 6GB Corsair XMS3
Motherboard - MSI X58 Pro-E LGA 1366
Video Cards - XFX GTX260 Core 216 x2 (SLi)
HDD - 2x 1TB in RAID 0
Power Supply - Kingwin 1kW Modular
Sound - Xfi Xtreme Gamer

Thats a shame. But it looks great anyways, great job.

Thanks Will. There is more to do with the project, but unfortunately it has to wait. I have some other ideas that have come to mind with the rads you sent me and this case mod. Give me a couple of months and I'll probably be back at it again.
I decided to remove the shrouds because after looking at it for a while, they just didn't feel right to me.
