A little backstory:

This is my daughter's euphonium, and it's seen better days. It's over 200 years old, handmade in the 1800s in Hungary. Valve action is buggered, the slides throw fine, but some braces are popped and there's nasty dent work.

I'm repairing dents, tightening the valves, plating the valve cluster and polishing it up, so it both looks and plays better.

This thing is ancient-it's a piece of history, but it sure sounds good, so we keep using it. It's one of the best I've played. And I've played a lot, lemme tell you.

Thats very pretty. I was a tuba player for like 4 years and got bored with it. I really wanted to play chello or violin

This will take a while, while I teach myself a few things.

I want to convert it to minibal linkages, but I can't find a positive thing said about it. I may convert it to strings instead. The old mechanical linkage is prone to fouling.

However, it's two centuries old, not sure how I feel about that...

Very ballsy, just due to the age of the instrument. Going to have a worklog?

Right here.

It's not my first rodeo so to speak-I'm able to build one if I try. I'm considering doing just that for a french horn...

Well, turns out this horn is the ORIGINAL type horn (one used in instances where they are handmade, with no serials) used to identify them-take a look at this link, I'll get the other pics that show the horn as we received it with teh ratty blue bag in the pic...

+rep for doing something music-related - I've played piano for 23 years now, about the same amount of time I've built models, and only a few years longer than I've been building computers; music's always been a big part of my life. I'm quite impressed -music instrument restoration/construction ain't easy! Good luck!

This is not abandoned, but there are difficulties in this-not the least is trying to get myself to cut a 200 year old horn.

I'm taking this to the U of A and getting them to give an estimation of its worth...

So I'm posting up a set of renders very soon that should illustrate my next musical project...

Rotary valves! That thing is awesome! I can't wait to see more. I would rep ya, but I gotta spread it first.
