I just did my pre-order. If only I had been picked to host a Windows 7 party!

If you live in the US and you are a college student, then head here and get Windows 7 Home Premium or Pro for only $30. If you want a disk (for clean install or upgrading from XP), then it will be an extra $13. At any rate, this is the best deal you are going to get. I ordered mine just now, but the promotion ends Jan 3.

You mentioned Pro? Is there a different link for that?

Once you register and get a link to the store section of the site, there is a little link under the big "buy home premium now" buttons that will give you pro instead. I was unsure about that at first, but it works. I promise.

Sweet! Thanks; I just registered, and sure enough, link appeared :D

I think this is the first time I've ever been glad that MS dropped a feature from one of the versions of their OS (in this case, AD support).

Unfortunately it's only an upgrade, but at 20% of the cost of an OEM license (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116756), I can deal with that :P

I got picked for the windows 7 party... lets just say.. Its meh way over hyped.. could be another flop if mac markets it right..

It gets really anyoing when things dont work are have been removed that vista had.. I actually have several vista computers I upgrade them all to vista so they were all the same os and easyer to sync.. but with more stuff not working on windows 7 I dont plan on moveing past vista.. untill they do with the features removed to make the os smaller and replaced with windows live (I hate windows live its crap) It makes it a hard sell even for free I dont really want it. .

?? What did you need that they took out? And what doesn't work? I've been running 7 (granted 7 Ultimate, but still 7) since June and haven't run into any problems yet.

The only thing I ever had an issue with was FTP in explorer. I haven't checked since the beta, however. Well, there was also PunkBuster, but it's normal for it to act up. I've been using Win7 since the beta back in late January.

Still no word on Australian students though :(

Australian University & TAFE Students can order Microsoft® Windows 7 Professional UPGRADE (32-bit & 64-bit) for $49.95 from itsnotcheating.com.au (http://www.microsoft.com/student/discounts/itsnotcheating/default.aspx) - seems you can also get Windows 7 if you're a student in Canada, France, UK & the US - there are other countries listed but they seem to limit the special deal to Office 2007 only.

And, shock-horror, in the UK it's £30 - nearly $50 - we get ripped off again - surprise surprise lol

I heard about this from a friend and couldn't believe it. It seems out of character for Microsoft to actually drop a price like that.

Actually MS and several other software companies do lots of cool stuff for students. Another example of MS-direct stuff is at theultimatesteal.com (http://www.microsoft.com/student/discounts/theultimatesteal-us/default.aspx)
For other software deals for students, check out journeyed.com (http://www.journeyed.com/) They've got lots of stuff for huge amounts off retail. For example; AutoDesk AutoCAD, 5-year license for $160 (CSRP, $4000) (http://www.journeyed.com/item/Autodesk/AutoCAD/100967885).

So, a little update. My disk kit never came and I went to the website to their tracking page and it said my order number was not in their records. I contacted support and they are "reviewing my case." The good news is that I can get Win 7 Ultimate from my school for $10. I will be picking it up tomorrow. If this $30 thing falls through maybe I can get my money back, although I have already downloaded it onto my wife's computer (I did this to try and fix it after it had a meltdown, but it wouldn't install so I reinstalled Vista, so it's lost).

You got the license code instantly though, right? TBH, that's the only part I'd really care about; I can get copies of the disc pretty easily.

I ordered this and downloaded the iso for 7 Pro, am I going to have to load XP first on my new rig im firing up tomorrow for the first time? Or can i just do a fresh install with the license key? I really dont want to put XP on my SSD's just to re format it for 7

Windows 7 lets you install for a 30-day 'trial period' without needing a license key. What I would recommend is just install without a license key (just make sure you select the right version), then once the install finishes, run the 'upgrade', and put in the license key you have. Kinda like what this (http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/winvista_upgrade_clean.asp), but with 7.

I got win7 for free through my school, and it was worth every penny. The disk is working it's way to the "recycle bin" in my kitchen.

idk, mebbe after some time I'll give it another shot, but I definitely am not an any hurry to do so.
