Hello everyone, I finally got my first college project in my Anthropology class and I need your help! The project requires me to survey a variety of people and analyze the data, and what better place then the TBCS Forums. The project has to do with how many biological races there are.

If you guys could answer a few questions in this format that would be great:

1. What is your age?
2. What is your gender?
3. What race do you consider yourself? ( ie. Caucasian, African-American, Asian etc.)
4 a. How many biological races are there?
b. What are those races?

There is no wrong or right answer

Legally, I am identified as Miccosukee Seminole
There is one race, Homo Sapiens, with regional variants. To call them races would in the truest sense imply that we're not all Homo Sapiens, and that we crossbreed.

1. What is your age?
22
2. What is your gender?
Male
3. What race do you consider yourself?
Caucasian (Small amount of Finnish, small amount of Scottish and I don't know what else.)
4 a. How many races are there?
5, I think? or 1? or more? It depends on how you look at it.
b. What are those races?
1 = Homo Sapien.
5 = European, Asian, African, Hispanic, Indian.
"or more" = European, Asian, African, American Indian (or Native Americans, they aren't Indian technically), Indian, Hispanic (Some would disagree, as "Hispanic" is fairly new.) ...hmm, I can't think of any others at the moment. Although, most of this is "ethnicity", not race. So, I would say that there is currently only one race of human and that is Homo Sapien. (...unless we have some kind of "old" human race living somewhere that we haven't found yet, but I kind of doubt it. That sounds like a good plot to a decent movie though. :p)

If you want to talk about Ethnic Groups, such as "Asian, European, African, etc etc", then take a look here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_of_ethnic_groups). There are A LOT of ethnic groups, but only one race and that race is Human or Homo Sapien.

4)
race (anthropology): A large group of people distinguished from others on the basis of a common heritage.

By this definition, there are an infinite and every changing number of races.

race (biology): A population geographically separated from others of its species that develops significantly different characteristics; informal for subspecies.

By this definition, there are still a great number of races, but they appear to be decreasing over time.

Whichever definition you prefer, we are all still of the same species (Homo sapiens), but as with any species, there is a vast amount of variation within that single species.

Fox or a Homosaipen freak. You decide!
4 a. How many races are there?
You'll have have give a clear definition. I believe there is one race just many sub-races.
b. What are those races?
Think of a country. There is your sub-race.

4a. I don't believe anyone knows this answer. I am unaware of a human 'race' survey that has reached every last corner of the earth. And is this limited to our species? If not: billions.
4b. Who knows? I remember reading about an island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean that was just a tiny spec; and for hundreds of years the same people kept breeding amongst themselves and developed their own unique traits...they didn't fit into any of the cookie-cutter races. I'm sure their story is only as unique as the next undiscovered island or mountain village.

I would also just like to add that Homo Sapien is the human genus and species...not our race. I think many people have been exposed to way too much political correctness. It's OK to recognize different races...it's not any different than recognizing the difference between a circle and a square. There's only an issue when the square thinks it is inherently better than the circle.

I think many people have been exposed to way too much political correctness.

Oh good, I wasn't the only one who thought that :D

Personally I think the amazing variety of human races is an awesome and beautiful thing; if we were all the same, life would be pretty boring.
