Greetings all! Haven't posted here in a while. Anyways I have a question, a friend of mine accidentally deleted about 2 weeks worth of her thesis not long ago, and I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to good (AND FREE) data recovery programs, specifically for NTFS.

Just about every program we have found won't let you actually save any of the recovered files with the trial version of the program. And unfortunately the programs that are free can only see specific file types, such as word docs, Jpegs, etc. She lost a database file for ArcGIS, so that's by no means a 'common file type'.

Anyone have any ideas? Thanks a ton!

Check your temp folder.. the files *might* be in there..

Start - run - %temp%

We tried that, unfortunately it is gone. At this point the only hope will be to get it with a data retrieval program.

I cant think of any free programs that will offer the kind of functionality you are looking for. :(

it sees all file types, and is free, will also let you backup the data for free, its a 100% free program from the makers of CCeaner and Defragler

/\ This. Recuva (http://www.piriform.com/recuva) is really good; and free always helps :D To my knowledge it's the only free data recovery utility for Windows.

Another +1 for Recuva, but it won't work on Linux files, even in NTFS. (LOOOOONG story.)

Downloaded Recuva, I'll be trying it on a couple of drives tonight. :)

I don't know of any free software that would work well. But if files are valuable enough to recover, and if it may happen again, then maybe it's worthwhile to pay for a good program. Personally, I bought Advanced File Recovery (http://advanced-file-recovery.com/) and it did its job perfectly when I had deleted important files by mistake.
