I just reformatted a computer with a pro CD but the key is for home. I thought it still may work but it didn't.

Home OEM needs an Home OEM key, Home Upgrade needs an Home Upgrade key. Ditto Pro.

Was it an OEM Pro cd?

Ya, straight from Newegg from when I built a desktop a few years ago.

XP keys actually even usually complain if you try and install a different service pack level, so like, if the key came with XP Home SP2, you have to find an XP Home SP2 disc or it won't work.

Maybe that's it. The home key doesn't say what sp it is but the xp pro was sp2.

Maybe I'll just wipe it again and try finding a home disk.

If the XP Home sticker doesn't specify a SP level, it's likely that it's the original release. If you can't find the original disc, look for XP Home, build 2600. I believe that was the original RTM build.

I can't confirm this - I've never had a problem - I constantly recycle OEM stickers off of dead machines and no matter what the sticker or the age of the machine it came from, and no matter what CD I'm using (I have pretty much all of 'em) I've never had this problem and I'm talking literally dozens of reinstalls...

SoC is right! Service pack level does not matter, as long as you are using the right key for the disc you are installing.

Home for home, pro for pro.

Hmm, maybe I was mixing a retail disc and OEM key.

EDIT:
Or MSDN disc and OEM key...or VLK disk and OEM key...or something, idk

Pro CD, Home Key. Wont work.. you need a Pro Key, or a Home CD.

As SoC said, you may be able to salvage a proper key from a dead machine..

Same goes for me. If other keys don't work I have one that I'm not using. I also have a disk for XP Pro, and on for media center as well if all else fails. Give me a PM.

Odd, I have never ran into that type of issue unless i was trying to use a retail CD with an OEM product key or any similar setup.
